April 28th, 2015, 21:16 Posted By: wraggster
Today we are back with another update: GATEWAY 3.2 ULTRA!
So let’s see what’s new:
– Latest EMUNAND support for old 3DS (currently version 9.7)
– New 3DS 8.1 JAPAN region now fully supported (multirom menu and so on)
– System Settings 4.5 support for New 3DS!
– Built-in NVRAM installer in the Gateway menu (behaves same as the Blue Card Gateway installer)
From now on, New 3DS users can rejoice that they no longer need to constantly use Cubic Ninja or Zelda Ocarina of Time to boot up into Gateway mode!
With this firmware update, you will be able to boot into Gateway mode using just System Settings, just like on old 3DS! No more extra accessories required once you have done the setup!
Just follow these simple steps:
1) Copy the Gateway 3DS 3.2.0 ULTRA Launcher.dat to your New 3DS microSD card
2) Copy mset_<region>.cia to your New 3DS microSD card (where <region> is your console region)
3) Copy “DevMenu.3ds” to your Gateway 3DS microSD card.
4) Boot into the Gateway menu with your preferred entrypoint (Zelda or Cubic Ninja)
5) Select the new “NVRAM INSTALL” option from the menu, proceed with installation.
6) Once installed, boot into Gateway mode and launch DevMenu.3ds from the multirom menu (press SELECT)
7) Start DevMenu and import mset_<region>.cia from your SD card.
8) Reboot console and verify you can now boot into Gateway mode with the classic System Settings DS Profile method. (Settings -> Profile -> Nintendo DS profile)
9) Enjoy! No more cartridge swapping required to use Gateway 3DS on New 3DS!
!! IMPORTANT !!
Please make sure to install the *CORRECT* mset cia for your region, we do not recommend this for new users with little experience !!
Please be aware that this downgrades the System Settings application on your SYSNAND, so be wise and
backup your SYSNAND (and setup EMUNAND) using the Gateway menu before you do this.
Note you can always manually install a newer CIA version back of System Settings, but using our Sysnand Restore option is the recommended option.
New 3DS users might also wonder why there is no EMUNAND update yet, and the answer is simply that while we are still making steady progress on this front, there is still alot of work to be done until we get to this point. So we hope our New 3DS users will understand that we cannot give an exact end date for this yet.
Rest assured we will be able to overcome this obstacle!
And as always, ENJOY!

Nintendo launches Amiibo Touch & Play: Nintendo Classics Highlights this Thursday, 30th April as a free download on Wii U.
The app contains three-minute demos of various NES and SNES games, which are unlocked when you tap an Amiibo to the Wii U's GamePad.Demos are unlocked at random, so any Amiibo figure can unlock any trial version. Up to 10 "scenes" from each game are included to try.Amiibo Touch & Play was announced during the last Nintendo Direct conference, when it was slated for launch in Europe during May.Its trial experiences are similar to the selection available in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U's Masterpieces mode, although are expanded upon here to provide another experience compatible with Amiibo. And, of course, after each trial ends you are then able to play more by unlocking the full version, available to buy via the Wii U eShop.

Nintendo is no longer interested in bringing SNES games to Wii U, according to virtual console developer and publisher Natsume.
Engadget reports on a pair of responses to fans from Natsume's US community manager that more than suggest the discontinuation of Super Nintendo games for the digital platform.
"At this point, it's unlikely we'll see any other Natsume SNES games coming to the Virtual Console, as Nintendo's interest has moved onto other classic systems," the representative said, referencing the company's recent shift to digital releases of Nintendo 64 and DS titles.
"If it's not up now, it's not coming.”
Natsume's spokesperson explained that while most Virtual Console games come from outside publishers, it's Nintendo that takes on the lion's share of the work preparing them for digital release.
"The titles for Virtual Console are handled by Nintendo," explained Cee-Cee. "The publisher and Nintendo discuss which classic titles would be a good fit and have the best potential to sell. Once a title is agreed upon, Nintendo and the publisher work together to bring that title to the designated system, with Nintendo doing the bulk of the work."

April 23rd, 2015, 21:34 Posted By: wraggster
Nintendo has confirmed that there will be a Splatoon and Wii U hardware bundle in the PAL regions.
The platform holder announced this on Twitter yesterday, and said that the bundle would be launching on June 19th.
This is three weeks after Splatoon's launch in the Wii U.
In Australia and New Zealand, the bundle launches on May 30th and will set consumers back AU$395.95. This folows the news yesterday that North America will be getting a Splatoon Wii U bundle.
The bundle comes with the black 32GB model of the Wii U – and it seems that the PAL bundle will feature a boxed copy of the game, rather than a download code like in North America.
Splatoon was revealed during the E3 Nintendo Direct last year. Nintendo's new shooter will be in stores, exclusively for Wii U, on May 29th.

Nintendo has admitted that the popularity of its Amiibo range took the platform holder by surprise.
The toys-to-life products are sold out at most UK retailers, with pre-orders of new models being snapped up in minutes.
Some retailers have even raised the price of the models to capitalise on their popularity.
“Right from the outset we hoped that Amiibo would be strong, but even our expectations have been smashed,” said James Honeywell, head of consumer marketing at Nintendo UK. “With a unique line-up of iconic characters that are loved by so many people, it really has been unprecedented.
“We hope to do a better job of satisfying these needs in the future with more stock, and, while there are always going to be some times when we can’t on certain characters, I suspect that is also part of the appeal.
“What we hadn’t anticipated was the number of collectors wanting to get them all – this has seen demand exceed supply in some areas. Although, if you search around, you can still find some of the more hard-to-find Amiibo sitting on shelves.”
Nintendo now hopes to win over a larger number of younger fans with Amiibo.

April 21st, 2015, 22:05 Posted By: wraggster
Nintendo of America has revealed a Wii U hardware bundle for upcoming shooter Splatoon.
Destructoid reports that the SKU, which costs $299.99, includes the Deluxe 32GB black version of the console, a download code for the game and Nintendo land pre-installed on the system.
Furthermore, the bundle will be exclusive to Best Buy in the region.
There’s not been any word yet on whether or not the bundle will be released in the UK, and if it does it’s not clear whether it will be exclusive to a retailer or perhaps only available through Nintendo’s own digital store.
Splatoon will be released in the UK on May 29th.

3DS modders are working on a homebrew app that turns Nintendo's handheld into a remote desktop for your PC.
A new post on the gbatemp forum shows gameplay footage of a 3DS displaying World of Warcraft. The player is able to control Blizzard's MMO via the handheld itself - but the results are not perfect. The homebrew app used is still an early build and so suffers from a particularly low frame-rate, something that its creators will improve in subsequent versions. But, for now, the fact this works at all is surprising enough.Nintendo will never support such an app officially, but for those willing to tinker with homebrew this workaround may eventually allow you to play games, watch movies and go online via 3DS with the full functionality of a PC.

April 17th, 2015, 23:34 Posted By: wraggster
Both the 3DS and the Wii U have sold more so far in the US throughout 2015 than they had at this stage in 2014, the platform holder has said.
Precise numbers haven’t been revealed, although the handheld is up 80 per cent year-on-year and the Wii U 20 per cent. The period saw the release of the New 3DS XL in the region.
What was specified, however, were the sales numbers of certain titles. Wii U multiplayer outing Mario Party 10, which was released last month, sold 290k units across physical and digital.
The 3DS version of Smash Bros, meanwhile, sold another 110k units in March, bringing its US sales total to 2.4m. US sales of the Wii U iteration stand at 1.6m while Mario Kart 8 has sold 1.9m copies since its release a year ago.
“The New Nintendo 3DS XL system continues to inject growth into Nintendo’s hand-held business, and the momentum created for Wii U in 2014 has carried over into 2015,” the company said.
“Take these two elements, add in fun, exclusive titles starring some of the biggest names in gaming, and overall sales of Nintendo hardware systems so far in 2015 have increased by nearly 60 per cent over sales during the same time frame in 2014.”

Changing a hidden setting on your Wii U can help with the performance of some games on your console – if you play them off an external hard drive at least.
It takes literally seconds to make the change, which involves disabling the 'spindown' function of the HDD. This power-saving measure has been known to cause issues with playing games from external hard drives on the Wii U, with stuttering, slow loading and complete crashes reported by players.
As explained by HUELEN10 on NeoGaf, it's a few simple steps to disable your external hard drive's auto-off/powersaving function.
- Switch on your console. Obviously.
- Head to settings, then choose data settings.
- Hold down on the d-pad for a second or so, then - while still holding down - hold the + and - buttons.
- A prompt will pop up saying "You can enable or disable the USB storage..." - it is enabled by default, so to change it you need to choose 'disable'.
And that's it. Your hard drive will now no longer spin down or go into energy saving mode while you're using the Wii U. This means stutters and crashes some people experience will no longer occur, and we can all enjoy much smoother super-fun-times. I tried it and it's super-easy to change.
There is discussion to be had as to why Nintendo has this option hidden. Disabling a hard drive's power-saving feature will increase power consumption slightly, as the drive will always be working, and it will reduce the lifespan of your HDD – but when they last at least four years after being on and running every day 24/7, that's not so much of an issue.
Still, remember to back up!

It could've been the latent heatstroke setting in from the three days I spent tut-tutting millennials under my breath at Coachella, or the five coffees I'd drunk to sustain some form of consciousness. But when I finished playing a demo of the new 200cc level inMario Kart 8 with some folks from Nintendo on Monday, my eyes felt looser in their sockets and a barely containable feeling of nausea lingered in my gut for about an hour. It was as if I'd come off a roller coaster -- like one of those daring, metallic serpents from Six Flags or Busch Gardens in the '80s that jolted you just a bit too much and gave the impression you'd nearly avoided whiplash.
All of which is to say, 200cc is not for the weak. It is stupid fast and stupid good.

How big of a difference do those extra 50 cubic centimeters in Mario Kart 8 make? Well, Iwata and Co. have a video showing the current fastest/most difficult setting (150cc) side by side with the 200cc level the outfit announced last week. The trip around Piranha Plant Slide starts out slowly enough, but it isn't long before the differences start to show. There's roughly a five second gap between when Mario passes the first eponymous flora on the 200cc speed and 150cc, for instance, and the lead only grows from there. By the end of the lap, the lead is almost 15 seconds. That's quite a bit! Anywho, the video, along with a few others, is just below and the free update hits April 23rd -- see you on Rainbow Road.

Nintendo has knocked the Wii U's biggest game of 2015 - its upcoming open-world Legend of Zelda - out of this year's release schedule.
Splatoon is set to be a highlight for Wii U in 2015.
In fact, Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma did not even commit to a 2016 launch when he recently announced the game's delay, and with word of the new Nintendo NX console on the horizon it is easy to speculate that the game could be held back further for repurposing as a next-generation launch title. So which games can Wii U owners still hope to play, and which are confirmed to be due out in Europe this year?Speaking in last week's Nintendo Direct conference, company president Satoru Iwata laid out the console's release schedule for the next few months:Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush is set to be Nintendo's next major Wii U launch, and will arrive in the UK on 8th May. Online shooter Splatoon will follow on 29th May, before Yoshi's Woolly World on 26th June.In terms of DLC, Nintendo will expand Mario Kart 8 with its Animal Crossing pack on 23rd April. New characters will also be added to Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U in the coming months. We expect Nintendo's next round of announcements at E3 2015 - and it's likely we will not hear of more release dates before then.

Hardware developer Hyperkin, the folks behind the Retron 5 gaming console, are making a new peripheral that will turn your iPhone 6 Plus into a Game Boy Color.
Dubbed the Smart Boy, Hyperkin's upcoming peripheral to play Game Boy and Game Boy Color games was originally announced on its Facebook page as an April Fools' Day joke. But secretly, it was testing the demand for such a system and fan fervour was so high that the very next day Hyperkin announced that it would actually get cracking on developing this."A lot of you were speculating that the Smart Boy is an April Fools' Joke. Well, it sort of was. We 'leaked' it with the initial intent of testing the market, seeing whether or not it should be something we'd actually make, under the guise of an April Fools' Joke," Hyperkin explained."Looks like you awesome folks ACTUALLY WANT IT, so the Smart Boy is now in development!" it added. "Thank you all for your enthusiastic responses!
