"Please insert your Wii Startup Disc. This will set up your Wii console."
The mysterious Wii Startup Disc that was listed on the back of the Wii box has been summoned in public. While glancing over the Wii kiosk set up at the South Shore Mall Software Etc. in Bay Shore, NY, Paul Miller snapped a photograph, with the Wii console pleading (with the above message) for the Startup Disc. The request is written in only English, Spanish and French, implying that the disk is region-specific.
It may be a last-minute firmware update, but why not have the console download the update when it connects? After all, Wii is supposed to be connected 24 hours a day. Maybe Nintendo doesn't trust its customers, and the Startup Disc is a mandatory orientation film on how to properly handle the Wiimote (think LOST). Or it might just be a very lame game -- "insert the disc and win!" -- that boosts your self-esteem.
Let's say the Wii Startup Disc is a region-specific firmware update. If a US Wii owner could obtain a Japanese startup disc, could he or she enjoy a more expansive Virtual Console launch lineup?

It's a golden era for Nintendo gaming as the company is preparing to launch its latest console, the Wii, in a few weeks. It's also quickly becoming a golden era for several of the system's games, as developers wrap up work on titles and send them off to factory for replication.
The second Wii game to be announced as going gold is Atari's Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2, following Sega's Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz. Both games will be on shelves alongside the Wii on November 19 in North America.
The game features more than 120 playable characters, 16 destructible environments, and nine gameplay modes. Based on the Dragon Ball Z anime, the game lets players duke it out in both single- and multiplayer.

Gamers asking themselves "How much is that Tamagotchi in the window?" will get their answers shortly. Namco Bandai today announced that the DS game Tamagotchi Connect: Corner Shop 2 has gone gold and will be in stores on November 14.
The game, which has already sold well in Japan, features more than 100 Tamagotchi and a dozen shops for players to look after. By providing stellar customer service to townsfolk, gamers will be awarded upgrades that can be applied to their storefronts. Various items can also be traded between Corner Shop 2 owners using the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

Via CVG:
The launch of the Wii console is little over a month away now, and although we've analysed every aspect of the innovative new console under the world's most powerful magnifying glass, it still conceals a few mysteries - particularly in the Virtual Console.
With the full list of launch-day Virtual Console games having been released earlier this week, we thought it the perfect time to focus on the retro download service and uncover some of those mysteries.
So we threw a barrage of questions at Nintendo and got back some interesting information - how the games are stored, how much they'll cost and more. Check it out below and, if you have any more questions of your own, throw them down in the comments section and we'll put them to Nintendo for answers.
Can games be stored on external media such as SD cards, and what happens if you run out of storage space?
Nintendo: Games that are downloaded can be stored either to the Wii's internal memory (512MB) or onto SD cards, which plug into the SD slot on the front of the Wii. In addition the console also stores a history of all of your downloads so that if you have to delete any VC games for any reason you could re-download them for free at a later date.
Will you be able to take your VC games to a mate's house, say, on an SD card?
Nintendo: No. All VC games will be locked to the console they are downloaded on so even if they are on an SD card they can't be used on other machines. You will have to take your Wii with you.
Does that mean that if your console breaks you lose your VC games forever?
Nintendo: No. Nintendo will offer support to help Wii owners with problems to recover their games.
GameCube games are played with GameCube pads. Can they be played with the Classic controller too, for those who don't actually have any GC pads?
Nintendo: Nintendo GameCube games can only be played using Nintendo GameCube controllers. The Classic Controller will not work on these games.
Can you specify which controllers it will be possible to use for each of the VC games types (NES, SNES, PC Engine, N64)?
Nintendo: All virtual console games can be played using the Classic Controller or Nintendo GameCube pads. The Wii Remote can also be turned on its side and used as a traditional controller to play NES games. However, a game will only be playable with the control mechanism it was designed for. So, for example, you will play NES games with the D-pad, not an analogue stick or motion-sensitive functionality.
When using a mixture of Wii and GameCube controllers, the Wii Remote or Classic Controller will take priority. So if you have two Classic Controllers plugged in they instantly become player one and two regardless of how many GameCube pads are inserted.
What about game manuals?
Nintendo: Each Virtual Console game downloaded will come with a digital instruction manual.
We are already aware that you won't be able to gain access to the Japanese or American VC in UK with a UK console. But if you import a US or Japanese Wii into UK, will that machine be capable of accessing the UK VC servers to download and play games made available to us Brits?
Nintendo: No. The European Virtual Console will be available only to European machines. If you import an American machine they would have to connect to the American service and use American Wii Points cards to buy content. Their warranty would also be void so this is not recommended.
Will there be a range of Wii Points cards available? How much will they cost?
Nintendo: At first, only 2000-point cards will be available. These will retail for £14.99.
Will you be able to buy VC Points via the internet through Wii using a credit card, like you can with Xbox 360's Marketplace?
Nintendo: Yes. Wii points can also be bought online via the Wii Shop using all major credit cards and will be credited to your account. A total of 10,000 points can be stored on your Wii account at any one time.

The top slot on YouTube today was occupied by Link and crew in a new Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess trailer. It barely managed to pass the second place winner, which was the intro video from the same game. If you ask us, the intro video is a bit more spine tingling, especially with the "Press A + B" menu at the start screen, *drool*. This trailer has no sound effects, no lines, just a (somewhat cheesy) fanfare-tastic soundtrack and lots of video goodness from the game. Link's wolf transition looks a bit weak, but we're hoping it's just a trimmed down version in the vid.

The kiosk hounds of NeoGAF snapped a handful of photos of the up and running Gamestop Wii display units, only to uncover a heretofore unknown (possible) option for Monster Games racer Excite Truck.
Appearing on the sound options menu, the SD Card option, seemingly inactive here, leads us to believe that the potential for reading MP3's from the memory card will at least be an option in one game.
Nintendo has made mention of MP3 playback previously, indicating that custom soundtracks would be available during Wii Photo Channel slideshows. This makes the muddin' hayseed within want to fire up some Mountain or Skynyrd... hell, any southern rock will do... and pick up Excite Truck at launch. Curse you and your attractive feature set, Excite Truck

It's not in 3D and you don't have to wave your arms around like an epileptic jellyfish just to shoot. And with two of our worst fears carefully sidestepped, we can show you these lovely new screens from Metal Slug Anthology on Wii.
That's right, those clever chaps at SNK have decided to include six different control systems for this package of classic Slugs so, while you can opt for the fully motion sensitive system, there is also a neat fusion of the modern and the retro that uses the Nunchuk for movement and only waves the wand to throw a grenade.
And while we can't wait to get our hands on this festival of 'The Slug', your eyes can at least dine out on the vast array of screens on the images tab culled from this much-loved shooter.

November 3rd, 2006, 17:11 Posted By: wraggster
Nintendo of Europe marketing director Dawn Paine has told GamesIndustry.biz that the company is confident the Wii will be a sell-out success this Christmas.
Nintendo plans to launch its largest ever sampling campaign in the UK this month, with a two month tour set to run from November 10 until January 13.
The tour will visit more than 60 locations across the UK and Ireland, and Nintendo intends to give one million consumers the chance to try out the Wii by the time the console launches on December 8.
"To really understand how fantastic Wii is, you really need to get your hands on it and play it. It's that straightforward," Paine told GI.biz.
"It's such a departure from anything else. It's not just necessarily about the graphics - it is just much more about the gameplay and understanding how the interface works."
The tour will focus on key mainstream and family destinations, including shopping centres such as Bluewater, the Birmingham Bullring and Sheffield's Meadow Hall. Consumers will also be able to try out the Wii at events like the Good Food Show, the Ideal Home Exhibition and Glasgow's Irn Bru Carnival.
There are two ways consumers will be able to try out the Wii. Firstly, a series of modular sets have been created to look like fully furnished living rooms and bedrooms, into which people are free to walk and start playing. Nintendo will also supply a series of "busking units" which can easily be unloaded and moved around.
"From a sampling perspective, because the tour is going to be so broad, we're going to be in locations where we're engaging with different types of consumer," Paine explained, adding that retailers have so far been "thrilled" with what they've seen of Nintendo's marketing plans.
"If we're in a shopping mall where there are maybe ten different retailers, once people have played it and realised how great it is, then obviously it gives them an opportunity to pick up a sale on the day."
When asked if the Wii is likely to sell out this Christmas, Paine replied, "I'm absolutely sure it will," adding, "Pre-orders are looking very, very healthy."
The Wii will launch in the UK alongside more than 20 games - just three of which will be first party titles. But according to Paine, "Our point of view is not to get too parochial as to whether it's first or third party, because obviously we've got a plethora of third party games there as well. We believe we've got a really great line-up across both first and third party."
Nor is Nintendo concerned with competing against the Xbox 360 - the Wii's main rival for Christmas cash now that the European launch of PlayStation 3 has been delayed until March.
"We don't want to sound arrogant or complacent about this, but from our point of view, we're just such a different entity and experience from anything else in the marketplace that we don't really see anything else as competition," Paine said.
"Because our product has got such broad mainstream appeal, we're sure that we're going to sell through all of our Christmas stock. We know that retail are so enthused about Wii that we're pretty much going to be taking over retail at Christmas. We're just really confident that Wii's going to be the huge hit."
But what about next year, when Sony's new console is also on the shelves - is Wii likely to be the market leader come Christmas 2007?
"I believe so, yes," said Paine. "We're confident that Wii is going to take the UK market by storm, so when I get my crystal ball out, yes, that's what we would see happening next year."

Flicking through this mass of new Banana Blitz screenshots, you will see everything from tilt-platform levels in a variety of environments, various bosses to a wide selection of the 50 minigames in action.
It's all good stuff, and with all those great-looking mini games, Monkey Ball will hopefully provide four-player laughs long after the five games in Wii Sports get ultra boring. Monkey Ball fans will get their fix of ball-rolling action on December 8, alongside the launch of the Wii.

A new trailer shown at the Nintendo World Tour in Japan has revealed that Fox McCloud, the lead character from the much loved Star Fox series, will appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, in development for Wii.
Fox isn't a new character to the Smash Bros. series, having already appeared in the N64 and GameCube editions, but his absence from the lengthy E3 trailer lead to suspicions that he might not be included.
The highly anticipated Nintendo all-star brawler is due for release in 2007. The latter half of the year, we're guessing.

Today Namco Bandai announced that the music puzzle game Gunpey DS has gone gold. In homage to the game's late, legendary creator Gunpei Yokoi, Q Entertainment has finished putting its updated spin on the title, a fast-paced puzzle game that flaunts sharp graphics and music-based gameplay. With a slew of playable characters, unlockable musical extras, multiplayer capabilities, and a plethora of original music, Gunpey is a portable puzzle game to watch this holiday season.
"While deceptively simple upon first glance, Gunpey offers hardcore gamers a true challenge and surprising depth as their skill level develops," said Naruo Uchida, VP of Localization at Namco Bandai. "Frenetic gameplay combines seamlessly with Q Entertainment's trademark visuals and music to create a truly unique, visceral puzzle gaming experience."
The game's original designer, Gunpei Yokoi, was on Nintendo's payroll for years and is the man behind the Game & Watch series, the Game Boy, and, unfortunately, the Virtual Boy. He also designed the WonderSwan handheld system, but was killed in a car crash before its release. Gunpey was his last game design.

In a total shocker of an announcement, Nintendo revealed they will be showing Mario Party 8 for Wii at the Nintendo World 2006 exhibit. Yes, I’m being sarcastic. Also shown will be some Virtual Console games, the Mii channel, and hopefully some new Wii channels as well.
But I’m glad Nintendo is finally doing a year-end Nintendo-only show again in Japan. I still have the exhibit booklet of Spaceworld 2001 where they first showed some levels of the GameCube’s Super Smash Bros DX (later called Melee). And guess what? Within the next 24 hours the first in-game level & character footage from Super Smash Bros Brawl will be shown in Nagoya, Japan! Rumor has it they might even show a new character. See the list of Wii games for show at the bottom.
I couldn’t make heads or tails out of the Nintendo DS exhibition list, but 1UP translated it and found they have revealed Picross DS, 100 Poems by 100 Poets: DS Shigureden, likely a software version of their art exhibit in Kyoto, and DS Bimoji Training, a Japanese calligraphy training tool. Also slipping onto this list is Bandai Namco’s Mojipittan DS, a fast-paced word puzzle game which has already seen success on the PlayStation 2, PSP and Game Boy Advance. See the list of DS games for show at the bottom.

Australians have known for a few months that a Wii console will set them back AU$399.95 ($309.72) when it comes out in the country on December 7, but other pricing details have so far been sketchy. Now, Nintendo has revealed exactly how much Aussie gamers will have to pay for a complete Wii fix.
Nintendo today confirmed Australian pricing for Wii accessories, Virtual Console games, and Wii points. While the AU$399.95 Wii console will come with one Remote and one Nunchuk controller, extra Remotes will set gamers back AU$69.95 ($54.18). Extra Nunchuks will cost AU$29.95 ($23.20), as will the Classic Controller. A Wii component video cable will go for AU$49.95 ($38.70).
As for Wii Points, the currency which will be used to purchase Virtual Console games for the Wii, Aussie gamers will have to pay AU$30 ($23.24) for 2,000 points (US gamers pay $20 for 2,000 Wii points). Virtual Console NES games will cost 500 Wii points, Super NES will go for 800, and N64 titles will be 1,000 points. Sega Mega Drive titles (known as Sega Genesis in the US) will cost 800 points. And while US gamers will have 30 Virtual Console titles to choose from in December, Australians will only have 26, consisting of 16 Nintendo games and 10 Sega titles.
Nintendo also revealed the pricing of its launch games. Twilight Princess will retail for $99.95 ($77.45), Wii Play will come bundled with a Wii Remote and retail for $79.95 ($61.95), and Wii Sports will be bundled as a pack-in with the Wii. In addition to its trio of first-party launch games, the company expects around 20 third-party titles to be available in Australia for the new console in December. As part of its earnings announcement today, megapublisher Electronic Arts revealed the release window of two of its highest-profile games. Crysis, Crytek's hotly anticipated PC shooter, and Army of Two, the co-op actioner for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, will now both arrive after the end of EA's current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2007.
"We have made some adjustments to our SKU plan that will move a couple of titles into fiscal 2008, specifically Army of Two and Crisis," EA chief financial officer Warren Jenson told analysts during a postearnings conference call.
During the same call, Jenson also confirmed that several sequels to EA's most important franchises are in the works. "Yes, there's a Sims 3 in development and it's likely to be a fiscal '09 title," said Jenson, meaning the game would hit stores before April 2009. The executive also confirmed that the Sims franchises will also be coming to two next-generation platforms--the Wii and the PlayStation 3.
"There is a Sims title that is being specifically developed for the Wii platform," said Jenson. "The Sims II holiday edition on PS3" is also coming, said the executive, indicating the game will arrive either in the 2006 or 2007 holiday season.
Several other new titles were unveiled during the call. "There will be another Lord of the Rings [game]... There's a new SimCity game in the pipeline and the next-generation version of Black. Those things alone are all new, relative to fiscal '07," said Jenson. It was unclear whether Jenson meant the games would arrive before the end of EA's 2007 fiscal year, or were just new to the company's financial plan for the 12-month period.
