After all the rumours, intrigue and speculation, the mystery of the Wii console is finally coming to an end as the manual is exposed, uncovering some of the last few details about the hardware.
One of the most interesting points highlighted in the manual, which was acquired by Joystiq, is the fact that certain virtual console games will only be compatible with the Classic Controller, which contradicts earlier word from Nintendo that seemed to suggest the GameCube controller to be fully compatible with all VC software.
Also on the topic of the Virtual Console is a formatting option, which clears all records of the Virtual Console games purchased on that console - to be used before flogging the console.
Good news for young ones - the Wii parental control features don't restrict use of GameCube games. So, all you need to do is get your dozy parent to THINK it does, then get your Resi 4 action in when they're not around.
The Fun! Mode, an option that allows you to draw and edit images, also allows you to play around with individual frames of a video stored on your SD card.
Wii Remote configuration, like speaker and rumble settings, will affect all remotes connected to the console. And the manual also confirms that the optimum distance range for the player to be from the sensor bar is between three to eight feet, as suggested by CVG earlier.
The Wii will be out in the US this Sunday November 19, while us Brits will unfortunately be a waiting a further three weeks for our consoles, which go on sale on December 8.

ttursas has again updated his homebrew game for the DS, heres whats new:
What's new in v0.1.4:
* Added texture manager for the plane textures, and now you can mix different planes
in network play.
* When changing planes while PAUSE is on, the plane is now correclty centered.
* Increased collision accuracy for the bullets (not for machine gun bullets, they are
handled simpler).
* Brought the two level layers closer to each other, and made the zooming less
aggressive.
* Background destroying wasn't distributed correctly between the players.
* The layer base color affects the planes, bullets and particles correclty.
* The front layer became darker after changing the layers for the first time.
* The player can choose the plane he wants to follow in the network play.
* Changed the network play logic a little. Now the client doesn't disconnect from the
server after the player has died. Disconnecting must be done manually.

Nintendo’s launch has been helped by the fact that it called the handheld market so well. DS didn’t convince nearly as many observers at its launch, as Wii has. And yet it has left PSP behind. We ask about Sony’s troubles, and about the delay of PS3 in Europe. What does that mean for Nintendo?
“It means that I’m going to have a great holiday,” says Fils-Aime. “It means that, with our strategy, we are going to have a fantastic holiday on Wii as well as on DS. Are my competitors making some mistakes? Yes they are. But I‘ll tell you this: Sony is a formidable company and I respect them and I don’t take them lightly. We have to do what we need to do, let them do what they’re going to do. If they continue to make mistakes that’s their problem not mine. We are focused on making sure that we are going to be successful.

If you've been paying attention to every bit of Wii news and trivia over the past months, you might know all of the following facts about Nintendo's newest system. For those of you not so in the know, here are some factoids we picked up on while tinkering this weekend.
It doesn't play CDs, but it plays AVIs off your digital camera's SD card.
The flaps that protect the Gamecube controllers and memory card slots are removable.
Wii Sports includes training and workout modes.
You can let one remote control all four players in Wii Sports: Tennis.
It takes five pieces of heart to make a heart container in Zelda: Twilight Princess
The box includes two clear plastic holders: one for the sensor bar and another that acts as a stabilizer for the thick, gray console stand
When used as a pointer, the Wii detects how far the remote is from the sensor bar.
The system keeps track of your cumulative play time for all games, and logs it on your Wii's daily message board.
The standard A/V cables that have worked on every Nintendo system since the SNES do not work on the Wii (the system-side input is different)
The system doubles as a great whiteboard.

Since all four of us can't play Zelda at the same time, we passed the Wii-less hours by poring over the 69 page "systems and settings" manual that came with the Wii (not to be confused with the 105-page, trilingual "system setup" manual that's also included). Here are some of the odd and/or interesting things we noticed.
"Up to 100 Miis can stay in your Mii Plaza." (pg. 11)
"The Photo Channel can display a maximum of approximately 1,000 photos. If your SD card has more than 1,000 photos, remove the card from the Wii console and remove or reorganize your photos in your camera, cell phone or computer." (pg. 15)
"You can not save or overwrite photos or videos on the SD card." (pg. 20)
"Any of the options in Fun! mode [doodles, etc. -Ed.] can be applied to individual frames of a video." (pg. 21)
The photo channel supports JPGs of up to 8192x8192 resolution and QuickTime files of up to 848x480. (pg. 22)
MP3 audio is listed under supported formats. After quite a bit of searching, we figured out how this feature works, but we didn't like what we found (more later.)
"NOTE: Your use of the Wii Shop Channel is subject to your acceptance of the Wii Users Agreement, the Wii Privacy Policy and the Wii Code of Conduct. Copies of the most updated versions of these agreements may be found at support.nintendo.com. [not yet - Ed.]" (pg. 24)
"NOTE: Some Virtual Console games can only be played with a Classic Controller. (sold separately) [this seems to contradict previous confirmation that Gamecube controllers would work on all Virtual Console games -Ed.]" (pg. 25)
"Software downloaded from the Wii Shop Channel is licensed to you, not sold" (pg. 25)
"NOTE: The calendar displays dates from January 2000 to December 2035." (pg. 31)
"NOTE: You will not be able to send photos from your Wii console to the PC/cell phone user." (pg. 36)
"NOTE: The Wii console uses a 24 hour clock. For example, 1:00 pm is displayed as 13:00 pm" (pg. 42)
The parental control features "does NOT control access to Nintendo GameCube games" (pg. 46)
"If you use the messaging features of the Wii console, you need to understand that Nintendo may monitor your use and share certain information (i) as required by law, (ii) where necessary to protect the company, its customers or its employees, (iii) as necessary to provide the services. [Big Brother is watching -Ed.]" (pg. 47)
"NOTE: The initial recommended distance for using the Wii Remote Pointer is 3 to 8 feet from the sensor bar ... Also note that the influence of direct sunlight and various light sources can make the Pointer operation less optimal. [Oh really... -Ed.]" (pg. 50)
By formatting the Wii Shop Channel from the Wii's system menu, you clear all "records of your transactions and rights to download software." (pg. 61)
"NOTE: You should format your Wii Shop Channel data first, then your Wii System Memory, prior to selling or otherwise transferring your Wii console to any third party." (pg. 61)
"NOTE: Adjusting the speaker and Rumble settings will affect all Wii remotes currently connected to the Wii console. [I hope everyone likes the same settings. -Ed.]" (pg. 63)

from the supercard site:
"Recently, there are some customers downgrade the SuperCard Lite version firmware v1.7 to v1.63. Even I don't know why they downgrade it, but they found out that the SuperCard Lite crash.
Here list below are the steps: How to upgrade to V1.7 again.
# 1. Format a MicroSD card.
# 2. Copy the firmware V1.7 file on it. Don't copy any other files.
# 3. Insert the MicroSD card and SuperCard Lite.
# 4. Open the DS power switch, don't care about the screen and wait 5 seconds.
# 5. press "A" button. You will find out that you can upgrade to V1.7 "

Just when you thought the Nintendogs franchise had gone as far as it could go, here comes one of the most clever uses of the license yet -- trainable toy dogs based on breeds from the games. There are two types; the simpler Trick Trainer Pups come with a magnetic bone that can be used to guide them through tricks. The more elaborate, aptly-named Interactive Play puppies do just that -- they interact by wagging their tails when they're stroked, howling when you howl, and some will even snarl and growl during a game of tug-of-war. Toss in a slipper-chewing feature and it's almost like having a real dog!
The plushy pups debuted last week in the UK from retailer Tomy and through Amazon UK for 9.99 (about $20 USD) for the Trick Trainers and 24.99 for for the Interactive Play Pups.

News/release from EO
Hi, I'm Eo.
This is my first work on NDS, it is a reader for EDICT dictionnary format (Roman based alphabet languages/Japanese).
Even though there are already commercial japanese dictionnaries for DS (latest versions with shape recognition are quite impressive), I started to implement this reader for EDICT to have access to the dictionnary of the word processor I use on my PC: jwpce. There are a couple of projects in progress around using the same dict format and I really look forward to them for it seems that they will be far more finalized than mine...
It is now still a proof of concept for testing Edict file access and displaying kanjis. The interface is a bit "rudimentary"... I'm trying to find a good way to display the characters and give access to functions. To keep the distribution small (less than 1MB with 7Zip) and save on memory I had to do some sacrifices on CPU so it is not yet really responsive too.
Any suggestions or bug report are welcome.
If you have time, you learn Japanese and you are looking for open source tools go have a look at Jim Breen's Japanese Page (EDICT homepage): http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/j_edict.html

CraigT posted some new WIP news of his Spectrum emu for DS:
Thanks to the two games submitted by Charlie as not working (wheres the rest of you, eh? ), i’ve made a lot progress in fixing bugs in the CPU core… Critical Mass was particulary useful. Thanks for your help. Charlie!
As a result, the following games now seem to work perfectly… Arkanoid, Bubble Bobble, Critical Mass, MegaBucks (yay!) and Zynaps. The AI in Chaos is fixed, but there is still the odd graphical glitch. Starquake still seems to crash, which is a shame.
The bug fixes have also sorted out the flashing graphics in a few games, such as Spike in Transylvania. Now i’ve just got to track down that Starquake bug…

Via IGN
IGN's final retail Wii system arrived at the office this morning, and we have been delving into the beauty of this mysterious new console ever since. After booting up the system and entering our system settings, we were shocked to discover that although we could see the different Wii channels, we could not access those that needed an Internet connection without an initial upgrade.
It seems that the Wii needs this upgrade in order to be able to connect to the Weather, News or Shop Channels. Unfortunately, when we tried to run this upgrade, we were treated to an error screen informing us that our Wii was unable to connect to the network. It seems that, prior to launch, the Wii will not have access to any of the channels or applications that require the user to connect to Nintendo's network. That's bad news for those of you out there intent on getting a Wii before November 19.
This revelation came as a shock and a disappointment to many at IGN, as it would have been nice to download some classic games for the Virtual Console. We will keep you posted on any later developments.
