One of the core ideas behind serious games is using digital entertainment to convey ideas and values. In the following article, I take a look at how Nintendo portrays its most famous female character in the recently released portable title, Super Princess Peach.
In Mario’s universe, Princess Peach - formerly known as Princess Toadstool in Western countries until 1996 - has always played the damsel in distress role. Until now, all she did was wait until Mario showed up and rescued her. Arguably, that is not a very active role but, to be fair to Nintendo, that is pretty much what princesses do in traditional fairy tales. In 2005, Nintendo launched Super Princess Peach, a Nintendo DS game where, for the first time, Peach was the protagonist. Rather than been rescued, it was now her turn to rescue Mario and Luigi who were being held prisoners by the evil Bowser.
I first heard of the game through Ian Bogost, who was shocked at what he called “Nintendo’s most politically incorrect game ever.” The reason behind this claim was that Peach’s superpowers are not physical, such as what is commonly found with male characters in the Mario universe. Instead, Peach fights with an unconventional weapon: her emotions. That sounded too weird to be true, so I ran to the nearest store and bought myself a copy.
The player can use different kind of emotional attacks: rage, crying and happiness (along with a sort of neutral emotion called “Calm” which replenishes her energy bar). Each emotion is represented on the interface through a heart that can be activated on the console’s touchable screen. Many game critics noticed the sexism of portraying a female character in this particular way. Ryan Davis, argued on his GameSpot review of the game that it had “some weird sexist undercurrents in the game design”. Similarly, Bryn Williams wondered at GameSpy: “Is Nintendo trying to say that females are all ‘emo’?”

While there's always the chance you'll be bludgeoned or shot up while holding down the fort for your chance to snag a Playstation 3, those who take the (presumably) easier route and grab a Nintendo Wii may be buying an accident waiting to happen. Those oh-so-cautious execs over at Wally World have already passed on their chance to install Wii demo kiosks due to "safety concerns," and even those testing it out in GameStop will be keenly watched. In preparation for Wiiday, 1UP has sacrificed some of its own men and women to ensure that all that pent-up excitement (not to mention the effects of sleep deprivation) doesn't lead to a Wiinjury. Although the big N fully expects everyone grasping a Wiimote to buckle up (to their wrist) first, we all know that's not likely to happen -- so you should probably take precautions to avoid getting butterfingers, tennis elbow, entangled, strangled, cancer (saywha?), and a whole host of other potential wounds. While you're brushing up on those Wii reviews, make sure you hit the read link to see just how dangerous that cutesy controller can be.

As Nintendo never fails to inform us, Wii is a console aimed at hunting down non-gamers. This Wario Ware: Smooth Moves video shows little of the game but plenty of the big N's mindset, featuring, as it does, a trio - nay, a gaggle - of young ladies getting to grips with Wii's controller. Much giggling results. Hit the movies tab above to watch the demo.
Sure, it's no different from Microsoft or Sony's achingly Zeitgeist-hunting promo imagery featuring over-styled models fumbling with new technology. But Nintendo is deadly serious about embracing the non-gaming masses - hopefully Ninty's target market will respond. After all, Wii is about fun for both the hardcore and the casual gamer.

This fresh batch of images from Wii-bound Sonic adventure, Sonic and the Secret Rings, gives us more views of the spiky one's towering dinosaur enemies, and hints at the sort of high-speed platforming we'll be racing through when the game's released next spring.
With a spiny T-Rex-like beast lunging over Sonic's path and a stampede of newly spotted Triceratops-ish dinos hurtling after him, we're guessing that Secret Rings will see us outrunning, dodging and hiding from these extinction-defying giants - possibly in chase sequences like the Killer Whale sprint in Sonic Adventure.
Also, with Sonic atop a drifting log in some of the images, expect more Sonic Adventure comparisons. Both Adventure games featured some brillo snowboarding moments (or streetboarding in SA2's case) so we're looking forward to some log-mounted rapid riding from Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed that Nintendo initially intended its next-gen console to go on sale for under US $100 - but certain features pushed up the price.
Speaking in an interview with Business Week Miyamoto said, "Originally, I wanted a machine that would cost $100. My idea was to spend nothing on the console technology so all the money could be spent on improving the interface and software.
"If we hadn't used NAND flash memory and other pricey parts, we might have succeeded," he added.
At first Nintendo "didn't think it was possible to build a powerful machine for less than 50,000 Yen" (330 Euro), and there were concerns about power consumption, cooling systems and boot-up time.
In the end, "We had to compromise on graphics and give up on a powerful chip," Miyamoto conceded.
"Many of our employees initially wanted high-definition graphics. But they agreed with us that graphics wouldn't matter if the games weren't fun to play." However, Miyamoto observed, the Wii is "much faster" than the GameCube.
He explained that much of the thinking behind the Wii came from trying to imagine what would convince mothers to buy a console for their kids - "We talked about basic concepts and goals, not about the technical specifications of the console.
"Our goal was to come up with a machine that moms would want - easy to use, quick to start up, not a huge energy drain, and quiet while it was running," Miyamoto said.

Nintendo has declined to confirm whether a new version of the Wii with DVD playback feature will go on sale outside of Japan - despite a "worldwide agreement" with tech provider Sonic.
Plans to launch the new model were first announced last month, with Nintendo suggesting it was unlikely the machine would make it to the US and Europe.
But earlier this week, digital media software company Sonic Solution confirmed that its CinePlayer CE DVD Navigator will be included in the new Wii, which is due to arrive "in the latter half of 2007".
Now a Sonic spokesperson has told GamesIndustry.biz that it has signed a "worldwide agreement" with Nintendo, stating, "In terms of the specific details of the relationship, Sonic provides an SDK, which Nintendo users to incorporate DVD playback into their system.
"As the enabler of technology in Wii, Sonic does not define the implementation. Sonic provided Nintendo with its DVD playback SDK, which will be integrated by them to their specifications."
A spokesperson for Nintendo UK said, "We have previously confirmed that an enhanced version of Wii capable of playing DVD's would launch at some point in the future in Japan.
"This release simply confirms Sonic as the partner in that venture and that the new version of Wii will come to market in the second half of 2007. It does not confirm where it will launch. We are simply not making any further region specific announcements at this time."

These new screens will give you a good idea of just how huge the courses in Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam really are.
Although they're admittedly not the most detailed graphics we've ever seen on Wii, the geometry of these courses is pretty cool, especially considering you can skate and grind on almost everything you see, including rooftops and overhead rails - as also shown in these screens. One shot shows a player having leaped so high off a ramp that you can see the whole level in the background.
There's some two-player action in there too, with the final game set to include a number of multiplayer gameplay scenarios aside from the usual race mode.

The fastest selling DS game of all time in Japan was once New Super Mario Bros. And then, Pokemon Diamond & Pearl saw release. According to a recent update on one of our favorite retailer blogs, it took just 46 days for the highly anticipated DS (dual SKU) RPG to reach the 3,000,000 mark, beating out the previous record holder, Mario.
Pokemon is the third DS game to reach triple platinum status in Japan, joining Mario and Animal Crossing. In contrast, the PlayStation 2 has seen just one game reach the coveted sales mark.
But Pokemon isn't the only thing that's selling on the DS. Nintendo's Common Sense Training game recently passed the 400,000 mark. Kirby, which was just released last week, has already topped the 200,000 mark.
Nintendo plans on shipping 1.5 million DS Lite units in December alone to Japan, according to this retailer. That probably won't be enough.

Square Enix announced today that the much-anticipated RPG remake Final Fantasy III has shipped to retailers across North America. Previously released only in Japan for the Famicom (Nintendo Entertainment System in America), Final Fantasy III is finally hitting U.S. shores exclusively for the Nintendo DS.
"Until now, FINAL FANTASY III has seen no remakes or appearances on other platforms since its original release on the Nintendo Entertainment System in April 1990," said Hiromichi Tanaka, Director and Executive Producer for FINAL FANTASY III. "Due to the game's age, a direct port might seem a bit dated, but now FINAL FANTASY III has been made anew on the sensational Nintendo DS platform, including new graphics in 3D, rebalanced jobs, and brand-new characterization for the four young heroes, who are now more dynamic than ever. As the only game in the FINAL FANTASY series that had not previously been localized, we are very pleased to finally bring FINAL FANTASY III across the ocean to players in North America. We hope that not only FINAL FANTASY fans, but a wide variety of players in North America enjoy the new FINAL FANTASY III."
Final Fantasy III for the Nintendo DS makes extensive use of the system's unique capabilities. Players can use the stylus to explore dungeons, dispatch foes, and cast spells intuitively. Furthermore, gamers can take advantage of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to access the Mognet and communicate with other players as well as NPCs in an effort to uncover hidden dungeons, quests, and items.
FINAL FANTASY III is rated E 10+ (Everyone 10+) by the ESRB and will be available at North American retailers for a suggested price of $39.99.

sgstair posted this news:
Hi everyone, it’s been a while, but here are my priorities in the homebrew realm for the immediate future. I’m going to disappoint some of you, sorry - but this is how it has to be.
The DSWifi project is going to be discontinued for the time being, until sometime next year. I’m not going to go into more detail on why, but I will not be continuing to work on it for now. I would like to turn it over to an individual or group of people if anyone would like to maintain it - if you’d like to do this, get in contact with me (on IRC, or leave a comment, or send an email…)
I will be starting a new project to reverse engineer the Wii’s wireless hardware, and build a new library based on it. This is expected to start around the start of december, and run a few months (who knows how long it will take)
The DSTunnel project is currently inactive, but I will make an attempt to revive it later this year, I would like to first complete the Wii wifi library, and I may actually build DSTunnel directly for the wii, or at least as one of the supported platforms.
I have 2 undisclosed DS projects that I will be working on… you’ll just have to wait and see what they are
Beyond all that, I have a few other general purpose libraries (besides the 802.11 and TCP/IP libs) that I’m going to start on at some arbitrary time (FAT lib, crypto lib, and some others) and a few emulator projects I want to work on.
So, that’s what my schedule looks like for the next several months - I now await your kind comments and harsh criticism

Final Fantasy house Square Enix has revised its fiscal first half forecasts upward thanks to a tax adjustment and the CGI movie Final Fantasy VII Advent Children.
According to a company statement, the Tokyo-based game company said that it expects 3.3 billion yen ($27.9 million) in consolidated net income for the six-month period ended September 30, 2006. The revision represents a 32 percent increase from the previous forecast. Sales forecasts were up marginally half a percent to 75.9 billion yen ($642.9 million).
The increase in net income forecasts was due to "an adjustment in the amount of deferred income taxes associated with consolidated accounting," while higher than expected licensing income for Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children drove up net sales expectations.
This most recent revision follows another adjustment Square Enix had made in recent weeks. In late October, the company decreased its net income expectations down nearly 17 percent and its net sales up 11 percent from the prior forecast.

Turns out that Japan will be getting a special edition of Gyakuten Saiban 4, which is Phoenix Wright 4 to us English-speaking people. The special edition pack-in is an encyclopedia cartridge that reviews all of Phoenix's previous cases. It also contains all of the background music so you can listen at your leisure. Of course, our desire for such an extra is nonexistent as we haven't played any of the games beyond the first, but we have a feeling the Japanese will eat this up.

Scientific journal, National Geographic’s sub division National Geographic Ventures, is teaming up with Destination Software to make games based on National Geographic’s films. One game is based on the March of the Penguins movie and it is coming out later this month for the DS and Game Boy Advance. Not exactly exciting news, but the “Sea Monsters” Wii game sounds interesting. It is based on a film of the same name premiering in 2007. Since the film is about aquatic and extinct monsters what kind of gameplay can we expect from a Sea Monsters game? Fishing for Astraspis? Or better yet maybe we will get to play as a Plesiasaur and use the Wii remote to mimic swimming motions. Sea Monsters also comes out for the DS and Playstation 2, but it’s doubtful those games will have virtual swimming controls.

As the next puzzler from Q? Entertainment, many looked to Gunpey DS to repeat the success of Lumines and Meteos. Once again, Q? Entertainment combine music with an incredible visual style to create a unique gaming experience. That experience, however, doesn't seem to be all that well-received by critics, as most of the reviews in now are pretty low. Any readers pick this game up and wish to comment?
1UP - 85%: "If you're looking for a more full-featured game, with greater variety -- and don't mind the cartoony milieu of Gunpey DS -- then you will find this version not only a superior value, but a superior game."
Games Radar - 70%: "Disappointment about the lack of groundbreaking invention aside, Gunpey is a fun and intellectually interesting workout for your brain. If you're sick of falling blocks, or just need some new challenge to wrap the grey matter around, give it a go."
Nintendo Power - 65%: "It's easy to achieve proficiency in the game, and so difficult to fail, you may find that your skill and your interest in the game plateau quickly." [Dec. 2006, p.106]

Next-Gen reports that shares of Nintendo are fetching 26,770 yen ($227) a piece which is an all-time high for Mario Inc. The company can pretty much thank their DS portable that continues to sell extremely well, success that the market views as an indication of Wii's selling potential.
Will the console meet mass expectations? The countdown clock is ticking.

This trailer of Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis, a GBA version of the spiny mascot's original outing, shows the 15-year-old Sega game to be as good as ever - just hit the movies tab to see it for yourself.
You'll be taken on a supersonic trip through the entire first act of the Green Hill zone, complete with Buzz bombers, Crabmeats, Motobugs and Newtrons - the classic enemies developer Sonic Team abandoned all too quickly in later games of the franchise.
The beautiful stylised graphics look thankfully untouched, although some of the sound effects seem different, especially when Sonic releases a Flicky from its robot shell. The spin dash attack (which wasn't introduced until later Sonic games) is also evident, although you can switch it off if you want to stay true to Sonic's first outing.
