Speaking to Official Nintendo Magazine, Yusuke Amano, the man charged with coordinating development of the recently releasedStar Fox 64 3D between Nintendo and Q-Games, said that the game's lack of online multiplayer was due to cost and time restrictions.
"Personally, I play a lot of online FPS games," he said. "This leads me to think that just making multiplayer parts of existing games playable online isn't enough to create a satisfying experience for users. The popular online games work in lots of things, so they play well online - and if we wanted to satisfy everyone who bought the game, the costs required for including online support would be vast.
"For this project what we needed to do was use Star Fox to provide users with a game that shows the appeal of Nintendo 3DS as quickly as possible. We put a lot of effort into the graphics, and if we had included online support then we couldn't have reached this level in the time allowed."

Zen Pinball 3D will have balls of steel flying at your face this autumn on Nintendo's 3DS. Developed by Zen Studios, the team behind the excellent Pinball FX 2 andMarvel Pinball, the title will launch with four tables on Nintendo's eShop.
The game will feature local hot seat multiplayer, online leaderboards and in-game achievements for accomplishing table-specific missions. The game does not come with a Nerf shell for the 3DS, however, so extra diligence is required when frustration at constant loss overrides sensibility. Ball out? How about WINDOW OUT?

Nintendo confirmed Smash Bros. for Wii U at E3, but had nothing to show. Now a claimed leaked document has supposedly revealed the game's possible title: Smash Bros. Universe.
The reportedly leaked design brief shows both Japanese and English logos, in which the 'U' in the word 'Universe' in the same font as the 'U' in the Wii U logo.
According to further translations of the typically blurry document, it makes mention of more third-party support (hinting at the possible inclusion of more characters like Sonic and Snake), the abolishing of tripping (a game mechanic that would see character occasionally fall over when dashing), and boosted speed for Samus after conventions set down by Metroid: Other M.
Nintendo has issued the typical 'no comment', and we'd remain deeply skeptical over the document's validity.
Series creator Masahiro Sakurai said rather bluntly that Nintendo "really shouldn't have announced [Smash Bros. Wii U] for the general public at this timing," later stipulating that "the early announcement was made chiefly in order to attract new team members", and that he 'has no time' to work on the game as he focuses on Kid Icarus Uprising.
You can safely assume, then, that Smash Bros. for Wii U, whether it is titled 'Universe' or not, is a long wait away.

Capcom cancelled what would have been Mega Man's 3DS debut in July, and former head of production Keiji Inafune apologised to fanssoon after despite leaving Capcom last October. Speaking to 4Gamer - translated by Game Blurb - Inafune reveals that he reached out to the publisher in the hope of saving the game. He explains that, when he told Capcom he was leaving, he offered to stay on as a contractor to finish projects he had started.
That offer was refused, and Inafune adds: "[I went to the trouble of] finding the right time, gathering the team members, planning strategies, all so we could barely start on Mega Man Legends 3. I wanted to leave Capcom to recharge my energy, and support Capcom from there, but it seems they don't allow it. I make all my effort to keep Legends 3 alive, but I'm really not sure I can do it."

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D will release on 3DS in 'early 2012', confirmed series creator Hideo Kojima.
The game was originally announced for a late 2011 release, but was delayed back in July to a worryingly vague '2012'.
However, speaking during a presentation at the Tokyo Game Show last week, Kojima clarified a 'winter' release window will be met, but in early 2012 as oppose to this side of Christmas.
He also reportedly confirmed that the newly-announced Zone of the Enders HD Edition will be out in 'early to mid-2012', joined by a Blu-ray release of the ZOE anime series in summer.

[Bruno]‘s was sent into the tip line, and we’re loving the possibility of using Playstation 2, Genesis, NES and SNES controllers with our Wii.
While there are commercial solutions that connect an NES or SNES controller to a Wii, everything connects to the GameCube port and there is no adapter for Sega or Playstation controllers. For his build, [Bruno] used an ATmega168 to read data from the classic controllers and translate that to the Wiimote I2C bus. Think of it as a new classic controller with the same form factor your 8-year-old self knew and loved.
The schematic for the build is very simple and [Bruno] has all the software out in the open. Even the PCB is single sided and looks like it would be a great candidate for a homebrew PCB. There’s no indication [Bruno] is trying to monetize his creation, so he’s either doing right, or so very wrong. Check out the Dualshock 2/Mario 3 demo of this board after the break.

September 20th, 2011, 00:13 Posted By: wraggster
The president of SCEA Worldwide Studios has admitted that he found Nintendo’s controversial decision to release a second circle pad add-on for 3DS “shocking”.
The peripheral was first revealed earlier this month, with Nintendo announcing an official release date and price last week.
“Well it’s not like they looked at PS Vita and said ‘we need to do that as well’,” Shu Yoshida told GameInformer when asked if the accessory was a response to the upcoming launch of PlayStation Vita.
“It’s clear that they didn’t believe a second analogue was necessary when they designed the 3DS, so I can only guess it was requested by Capcom’s side. Maybe a Capcom producer told Nintendo that to play Monster Hunter we need [two] analogue sticks.
“That I don’t know, so I can only guesstimate. It was a bit shocking to see what they came up with.”
Yoshida also dismissed the notion that Nintendo’s recent 3DS price cut was a pre-emptive move against the PlayStation Vita.
“I don’t personally believe that they dropped the price of the 3DS to respond to our pricing,” he insisted. “We didn’t price PS Vita to their price, either. We had that plan since the last couple years.
“My personal guesstimate is that they have their business plan and goals to sell a certain amount of 3DS units, and they realized post-launch was that the pricing was not helping them to achieve the goal that they set. That’s my estimate.”

It's little surprise that Cut The Rope will be released on DSiWare this week given its success - it was downloaded six million times in its first four months - but given Nintendo's stance on small independent, or "garage" developers, it's heartening to see a true mobile success story available as a download for Nintendo handhelds. However, those that take this as a sign that Nintendo has changed its policy on smartphone software should note that it's priced at €5, compared to just 69p on the iOS App Store. It'll also be available on the eShop, the 3DS download store on which an updated 3D version of NES shooter Twinbee will also be released this week.

September 19th, 2011, 22:25 Posted By: wraggster
Netflix, the long-running film rentals service, has added console discs to its newly deliniated physical delivery service Qwikster, at an as yet undisclosed price point.
Announcing the new service in an official blog post, CEO Reed Haastings called the new revenue stream part of an "upgrade package" to the Qwikster service, in the same vein as the recent addition of Blu-ray discs.
"One improvement we will make at launch is to add a video games upgrade option, similar to our upgrade option for Blu-ray, for those who want to rent Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 games," explained Hastings. "Members have been asking for video games for many years, and now that DVD by mail has its own team, we are finally getting it done."
As the service is subscription-based rather than priced per rental unit, users will pay an additional premium per month to rent games if desired, although that premium has yet to be publicly confirmed.
Qwikster is a newly-formed division of the Netflix business which deals with purely physical media. The main Netflix brand will now deal only in streaming. The two sides of the business will be clearly deliniated with separate websites and payment systems.
That division, accompanied by a price-rise, has met with some resistance from customers, who feel that the two options should be combined into a single service once more to save searching for a film again via Qwikster should it not be available for streaming via Netflix. Hastings explains his motivations for the move in the same post.
"For the past five years, my greatest fear at Netflix has been that we wouldn't make the leap from success in DVDs to success in streaming," writes the CEO.
"Most companies that are great at something - like AOL dialup or Borders bookstores - do not become great at new things people want (streaming for us) because they are afraid to hurt their initial business. Eventually these companies realize their error of not focusing enough on the new thing, and then the company fights desperately and hopelessly to recover. Companies rarely die from moving too fast, and they frequently die from moving too slowly."
The post itself makes light of the introduction of games to the service, with the announcement warranting only the brief paragraph above, but in fact the move is a clear step towards taking market share from the major game-rentals service in the US, GameFly. Pricing will clearly be an important factor in the success of the new business arm, but given Netflix's size and resources, the company is likely to field an offer which compares competitively to GameFly's.

In case you haven't met him already, Obiwan222222 represents the minimalist alternative to hardcore modding. He's already shown us Wii games running on the PSP and iPod Touch, and now he's pulled off the same trick on his Asus Transformer. It's all done with network streaming: he loads up Super Mario Galaxy 2 on his PC using the open-source Dolphin emulator and then transmits it to his tablet via the Splashtop HD remote desktop app for Android. He also throws in an Xbox 360 controller to make things look more confusing than they really are. We'd obviously worry about lag with this type of setup, but the video after the break makes it look just about playable.

It may not be the first console we've seen modded and squeezed into portable clothing, but we've got to admire the sheer pluck of cramming all the GameCube's goodnesss into PSP hardware. Modder Ashen, also responsible for the stockier GameCube Fusion, has managed just that, with some heavy-duty adjustments and modifications. The Fusion Micro is a fair bit chunkier than the original PSP, mainly due to the fan and heat sink behind all that busy hardware. Other modifications include an extra analog stick on the right to mimic the GameCube controller and two card slots for games and emulation. Despite this impressive engineering, however, it won't stand up to extensive plays; this unholy union of Nintendo and Sony can only squeeze out about two hours of gaming from its 5000mAh battery. Click on after the break to see Zelda in action, alongside a full break-down of the controls and modifications.

Here's scans of the Japanese 3D Virtual Boy Magazine for you. Even for non-Japanese, this magazine contains some interesting stuff, like original full color renders of Virtual League Baseball, 3D "cross-eye" images of VB games and a stereogram on the cover. When you hold it very close to your eyes and stare right through it for a while, and then slowly take it away from your eyes, something like a large 3D-"V" becomes visible.

The very first Dragon Quest game is on its way to 3DS in the form of a remake titled Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D, Square has confirmed.
Dragon Quest: Terry's Wonderland was actually itself a remake of the original NES game (simply titled Dragon Quest, or Dragon Warrior in Japan) released in 1998.
The 3DS version will deliver all the old monsters plus a slew of new ones from the upcoming Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2, which is out on DS in US tomorrow and UK on October 7.
Details are otherwise scant, but expect to see more of the 3D remake in the coming weeks

Nintendo may be AWOL on the TGS show floor (as usual), but that's not stopping Capcom from strutting the big-N's hardware in its stead -- we dropped by its booth for a gameplay-free handling of the 3DS extended slide pad add-on. The control-extending cradle is every bit as bulky as it looks, killing any hope we had of cramming the rig into our pocket. The trade-off? It's much more comfortable to hold than the naked 3DS, giving our meaty hands a smooth, contoured surface to grip. The new right-hand circle pad feels just as solid as the handheld's dedicated pad, and didn't significantly obstruct our access to the 3DS' face buttons. All in all, the cradle is a comfortable, if awkwardly large extension to the 3DS that doesn't seem to compromise the handheld's existing input. Hit up the gallery below to size up the plump peripheral for yourself.

September 15th, 2011, 00:03 Posted By: wraggster
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has again dismissed calls for the company to move into the smartphone market, saying that doing so would mean "Nintendo would cease to be Nintendo."
Iwata once again faced calls for Nintendo to turn to smartphones in a bid to revive its fortunes, after its pre-Tokyo Game Show conference, in which it announced a host of new 3DS games, caused its share price to fall by five per cent. Speaking to Nikkei, though, Iwata said that while he could see merit in such a move in the short term, it would be catastrophic in the long term.
"This is absolutely not under consideration," he said. "If we did this, Nintendo would cease to be Nintendo. Having a hardware development team in-house is a major strength. It's the duty of management to make use of those strengths.
"It's probably the correct decision in the sense that the moment we started to release games on smartphones we'd make profits. However, I believe my responsibility is not to short-term profits, but to Nintendo's mid- and long-term competitive strength."
As we reported yesterday, this latest drop in Nintendo's shares - its stock price has now halved since the turn of the year - was once again blamed on the company's reluctance to join the rush to smartphones. Despite Iwata's claim that the new announcements meant 3DS had "the kind of extensive line-up that has probably never been seen before in the history of videogames," investors were unmoved, with one saying: "I don't think the new games will make any difference.
With Super Mario 3D Land to be released in November, and Mario Kart 7 and Monster Hunter 3G due the following month, Iwata is perhaps entitled to be confident. This is, however, the first sign of recognition that Nintendo would stand to benefit from a move into the smartphone market, if only in the short term.
