As reported a short time ago, a new zine titled NES-Bit Magazine System was in the works and now it’s finally here in all its glory. Created by the Nintendo community, the zine is devoted to the NES with articles, reviews and much more. With a colourful design and enthusiastic team of writers, this is one zine to look out for. For their inaugural issue, the team have put together an article on Nintendo movies, Game Mash-Up, Hidden Gems, Joy of Sticks, A Brief NES History, NES Homebrew, NES vs Game Boy Face-off and much more.
The digital PDF version can be found on the NES-Bit website and costs a measly £2.00 (just over $3.00), while a print version will be available at a later date.

I am pleased to announce the public release of The Rat Race, a subtle hack of EarthBound which restores a great many censored elements from the original Mother 2 while altering and switching some of the major characters to make it a different story from the original.
The best way to describe this game, in my opinion, is as a kind of applied fan fiction; while literary EarthBound fan fiction abounds and several game hacks as well, I’ve not seen these concepts combined until now. Where EarthBound is a rather satirical look at modern life in the West (especially in the USA), The Rat Race is a similar story told from the point of view of those being satirized.
In any event, anyone who’s played EarthBound should find the settings and story of The Rat Race both familiar and strange much as the characters in the original Star Trek found their mirror universe to be in the “Mirror, Mirror” episode, albeit (I hope) not so much more evil. Enjoy!
(Now that I think of it, however, exploring an evil mirror universe of EarthBound might be a story worth pursuing. If anyone here has the interest and know-how to make that game, feel free.)

Gamers will be able to tone down Zelda: Skyward Sword's obtrusive HUD in the game's full release.
The final version will include three HUD settings - Standard, Light and Pro, reports IGN.
Standard is the bloated HUD version used by Nintendo in previous screenshots. It dumps a replica of the entire Wii remote on-screen, with each control labelled.
Light will rid you of the remote graphic, but the buttons remain.
Pro is your option if you want to clear the screen of clutter completely. It just leaves health, shield strength, rupees and stamina amounts in the upper left corner of the screen.
The opening act of the game is a control tutorial that has you rescuing Zelda's lost pet Mia.
The game's HUD in 'Standard' mode - thankfully optional.
Skyward Sword moves closer to providing dialogue for silent protagonist Link than ever before. Players are able to choose different ways of responding to direct interaction with other players, according toGamesRadar.

Sega has announced that Shinobi will feature a special guest in the form of theoriginal shinobi, Joe Musashi (seen furtively crouching here). The game's challenge mode features a playable Joe Musashi, and will be unlockable via either Play Coins or StreetPass.
As the name implies, challenge mode faces players with a difficult set of levels. To make them even tougher, Sega notes that players will die in one hit, a nod to Shinobi's arcade roots. See Joe in action in the trailer above.
Shinobi will be released this November.

The doctor is not in -- suffer on your own and in silence, 3DS players. Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights has been delayed until Dec. 6. Doctor Lautrec was originally slated for a Nov. 13 release on 3DS, but Konami has sent out emails confirming the delay and Amazon has updated its page accordingly. You know how these doctors are; he's probably stuck at a conference, or performing last-minute open-heart surgery, or -- oh. He's an archaeologist? Well, then we hope he isn't doing that heart surgery thing.
While you wait for Doctor Lautrec to launch, take your sickness away and play another handheld game involving puzzles and a super-smart dude in a trench coat and top hat. To make it challenging, we won't even tell you what this mysterious other game is called. Good luck, professor doctor.

72 Pins has recreated modern classics by designing custom NES cartridges to feature hit games of the post-8-bit world, as seen above. These time-warped squares of nostalgia are awesome art installments -- not actual remade games -- although the cart's original game is intact. Think of it as buying a piece of art and getting a used game thrown in for free.
Available redesigned cartridges include God of War, Dead Space, Halo, BioShock,Shadow of the Colossus and others, with Super Meat Boy, Castle Crashers andPaRappa the Rapper coming soon. All cartridges run $20, but follow 72 Pins on Twitter for some sweet deals, such as today's, which is a code for 50 percent off anOkami cartridge.
Suggested uses for NES-cartridge art include wallpapering, bookshelf-filling, 3D-sculpture building, framing and wall-hanging, or sprawling carelessly across your table at the local coffee shop to complete that old-school hipster vibe your thick-rimmed glasses, plaid button-up and copy of the Communist Manifesto have been trying to attain for months.

The title will feature 40 rock anthems, music videos and a range of solo and multiplayer modes. It will arrive on October 28th in the UK.
It includes songs from artists such as Coldplay, Alice Cooper, My Chemical Romance, Kasabian and even Elvis Presley.
“The game will make a fantastic addition to the portfolio of We Sing titles,” said Nik Blower, sales and marketing director at Nordic Games.

The UK will be awash with the colour red to ensure consumers are well aware of Nintendo’s bright new 3DS.
Over 6,000 UK locations will be ‘painted red’ around the launch of the Metallic Red 3DS which hits shelves today, with six-sheet and 48-sheet posters advertising the new colour.
Nintendo will also take over the two digital screen towers on the A4 at Hammersmith which is connected to the M4.
“The launch of the Metallic Red 3DS will be supported by a large scale nationwide outdoor campaign, painting the streets red for this great new hardware launch,” Nintendo product manager Zoe Cooper told MCV.
“Metallic Red 3DS brings with it all the amazing features of the all new handheld console the Nintendo 3DS, but in a hot new colour that will appeal to all. It’s another great reason for existing DS owners to purchase the next generation in handheld gaming – the Nintendo 3DS.”
The launch comes ahead of several new Nintendo 3DS games including Super Mario 3D Land on November 18th and Mario Kart 7 on December 2nd.
Ads on gaming websites will drive pre-orders of 3D Land ahead of release.
Closer to launch, online activity across all major kids sites will show off the game’s different features.
Super Mario 3D Land will have a large TV presence in mid-November, with a separate campaign targeting kids TV channels.
Nintendo’s junior product manager Roger Langford added: “All of this activity will ensure that all fans of Mario will be aware of his latest adventure.
“And with Mario Kart 7 also on the horizon, it’s an exciting time for Nintendo 3DS.”
Mario isn’t the only Nintendo icon to be backed by a massive marketing push this Christmas.
Super Pokémon Rumble – the series’ first retail release on 3DS – will be promoted in an ad with popular boy band One Direction, while TV spots for Professor Layton and the Spectre’s Call on Nintendo DS will target women over 35 years old.
Finally The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will receive a dedicated online and TV campaign around the Wii game’s release on November 18th.

Former Guitar Hero developer Vicarious Visions is working on three unannounced new titles, one of which is for the Wii U, according a developer CV.
The LinkedIn profiled of an associate producer at the Albany-based studio, as reported byGameSpot, references ongoing work on a number of mystery titles.
Project Atlantis is listed for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Project Phoenix for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii and Project Nova for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U.
The developer was responsible for the Wii and DS versions of Guitar Hero release until the franchise was shelved by publisher Activision earlier this year, and is currently working on the 3DS SKU of Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure.

You might have missed it yesterday, since it wasn't during the normal Nintendo downloadable game release day, but The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition is free to download right now on DSiWare (which is, of course, also accessible with the 3DS). If you've got friends to play with, it's a fun, bite-sized Zelda experience; if you don't, it's basically a really weird Zelda game where you don't get to keep your items.
Another Nintendo classic is available on 3DS today: Super Mario Land 2, which introduces Wario for the first time -- long before he starts his software company. And on WiiWare, escapeVektor: Chapter 1 combines Qix-style outline completion with a storyline about being trapped in a computer.
Nintendo also notes that new 3D trailers for Super Mario 3D Land, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Mario Kart 7, Luigi's Mansion 2, Animal Crossing, Paper Mario, and Mario Tennis will be available on 3DS "soon," so watch all those Blue Man Group videos now to make sure you have time for these.

This is the last week in which you will be able to buy the classic 2D space shooter R-Type on your Wii via the Virtual Console.
The hard-as-nails shooter will be removed from the service on September 30, Sega has confirmed. The Virtual Console offering is the Master System version, which isn't our favourite in the series' history (the Super Nintendo entries are better) but still well worth having.
Sega is coy on the circumstances surrounding its removal from the VC service, revealing only that it's due to 'a licensing issue'.
Shame. Go grab it now.

Intelligent Systems, developer of the beloved strategy seriesAdvance Wars, will release its first 3DS game, Hiku-Osu, on the Japanese eShop next week.
In Hiku-Osu - which is to be published by Nintendo - players are cast as Maro, tasked with clearing his town of a block-like toy called Hiku-Osu.
Maro can push and pull these blocks to clear a path to each of the game's 250 stages, some of which will feature Nintendo settings and characters, and there's also a level editor. We've asked Nintendo about their plans for localisation, and will update should we hear back.

In celebration of its 25th birthday, Nintendo’s iconic Zelda franchise is to take the limelight at October’s GameCity6 event in Nottingham next month.
And chief amongst the planned activities is the transformation of Nottingham Market into a “Hyrulean Market Village” straight out of one of the Zelda games.
Starting at the Market, attendees are tasked with tracking down pieces of the Triforce in “a series of adventures”. They’ll also get their chance to create their own shield and sword, as well as learn to play the Ocarina – and possibly win the instrument.
A world record attempt is also being made. Six gamers will attempt to play all 15 Zelda games in canon order from start to finish. A one-off magazine will also be published based on material submitted between the Wednesday and Friday before Zelda day.
The Zelda day will take place on Saturday October 29th. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is released in the UK November 18th.

Nintendo is being sued for its Wii Remote, and suddenly we've got a strange sense of déj* vu.
The platform holder is being pulled into yet more litigation from another electronics firm, UltimatePointer, maker of the Upoint laser pointer presentation remote which, by the way, it's not currently selling as the product is apparently undergoing a "rigorous testing scheme."
The filing claims that Nintendo has directly infringed one of its pointer-related the patents "with the unauthorized selling of its Wii remote hardware."
Not stopping there, the firm is also targeting retailers such as GameStop and Best Buy for infringing the patent by selling the devices. Awesome.
UltimatePointer seeks damages and legal fees.
This will echo in the minds of those who heard the news earlier this month of technology firm ThinkOptic's similar lawsuit against Nintendo for the Wii Remote's infringement of a patent related to "electronic equipment for handheld vision based absolute pointing system".

Ancillary services like Call of Duty: Elite and Battlefield 3's Battlelog will be "a necessity" for all mainstream games in the not-too-distant future, according to Activision's digital VP.
Jamie Berger told MCV that a supporting social network/stat-tracking/content delivery platform is increasingly a vital part of attracting and maintaing a large audience.
"We believe that a 24/7, year-round services strategy that broadens the game experience beyond just playing is going to be a necessity," he explained.
"Right now, it's an option, but in three to five years, it won't be. To support a diverse player base, you will have to have a services and ongoing content strategy. I don't see how games are going to manage without that.
"Elite is about Call of Duty being bigger than ever five years from now and laying the groundwork for that."
The Call of Duty Elite service is due to launch alongside Modern Warfare 3 in November.
