For a company that's big on fanfare, Nintendo loves to slip in the little nuggets of info that it knows will drive its users insane. Take, for example, the 3AM press releases for DSi release info and price, or how about the early morning announcement of Revolution's name change over to Wii. Fanfare? Not really.
Then we get this out of the blue:
Excitebots: Trick Racing - April 20, 2009
This little stealth announcement on the Wii release list sent out this morning, which could be taken as a Fallout 3 "Fat Man" mini-nuke to what we hope is going to be a megaton-inducing E3 showing this year, also took us entirely by surprise. Punch-Out!! got its date, a few more third party games were added to the first half of Wii's 2009, but then what's this? Excitebots: Trick Racing?
What the deuce is an Excitebot, and how do we buy one?
Not only has there been no info thus far on what appears to now be an Excite Truck sequel of sorts, but this game is coming out of nowhere, and it's coming fast. The current release date of April 20 is less than two months away, and we don't have so much as a screen of the game to show off.
A few other tiny details are included, such as mention that the game will use the Wii wheel shell (meaning it's tilt to turn, just like the original), and confirmation that it is indeed an extension off the Excite Truck brand. What's with the "bot" name? This is merely speculation, but perhaps Nintendo is adding in some sort of vehicle creation system into this one, or simply using the name to expand on other types of transportation altogether. If we had it our way, we just want to race a classic Excitebike motorcycle character; maybe made up of colored cubes like a little 3D pixel art? We can dream…
We've currently got a call out to Nintendo on this one, but we're awaiting comment on the game. Expect more news in the near future though, and if we know the Big N well enough, it'll most likely come when you least expect it.

Our good friends at the rumor mill are at it again, this time churning out a most delicious prospect: a Silent Hill remake for the Wii and PSP. Supposedly under development at Climax, a report suggests that the return trip to Silent Hill is one of two Konami projects at the studio, the other being (according to job listings) a "ground breaking next-gen game for the PS3 and the Xbox 360."
We've asked Konami and Climax for comment and we'll be sure to update you as soon as we receive a response.

Another organization is blowing an imaginary whistle on Brain Age and other similar products designed to sharpen minds. Consumer group Which assembled a panel of three neuroscientists to test the ideas that brain training games improve memory and help prevent dementia. The panel found "weak" or no evidence to support the claims.
"There is no evidence that using this product will have any functional impact on your life whatsoever," Dr. Chris Bird, one of the scientists involved with the study, said. The panel concluded that "surfing the internet or chatting to friends" would have the same prefrontal cortex blood flow effect as doing DS-based math. Basically, it means that, in terms of brain activity, Brain Age seems to work about as well as any other mentally-stimulating pastime.
"If people enjoy using these games, then they should continue to do so -- that's a no-brainer," said Which's Martyn Hocking (perhaps with pun intended -- emphasis ours). "But if people are under the illusion that these devices are scientifically proven to keep their minds in shape, they need to think again" (Hocking is just full of puns, isn't he?).
Nintendo responded, saying that it has never claimed scientific proof of Brain Age's effectiveness: "What we claim is the Brain Training series of games, like playing sudoku, are enjoyable and fun. These exercises can also help keep the brain sharp." It also helps your organization make the news!

The Chinatown Wars are about to begin. Rockstar Games' first official trailer for the upcoming DS-exclusive Grand Theft Auto game finally shows off some in-game footage ... provided you slam your face to the monitor and squint. This much-too-brief trailer gives us a very basic synopsis of the game's story, and does very little to highlight any of the game's compelling gameplay. That's a shame -- because we really do like the game.

A host of North American games dated, including ExciteBots, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat and Personal Trainer: Walking
Nintendo of America has dated a number of its upcoming big releases for the next quarter, and it’s Punch Out’s arrival on May 18th that leads the way.
The Punch Out brand is one of Nintendo’s most fondly remembered but least exploited, and seems ideally suited to the motion sending Wii console.
Also dated for the home machine is Excitebots: Trick Racing, the latest extension to the Excite franchise, which will be released on April 20th, and GameCube remake Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, which will join the New Control range on May 4th.
On the DS front, the firm has also dated Personal Trainer: Walker, which will be released on May 25th.

If dropping 80 bones on a Wii Super Famicom Classic controller sounds a wee bit insane, how's about a Jackson for a Famicom Wii controller? Datel's Old Skool Retro Controller (seriously, how great is that name?) works with any game that supports the Wii Classic Controller, and the unique "rapid fire" mode should really keep things interesting when firing up the Virtual Console. Can't really go wrong at $19.99, right? Right.

Now that you've had your fill of mocking amateurs with their Wii Classic Controllers, it's time to prove your skills by going pro. Nintendo Japan just listed the Wii Classic Controller Pro that brings a bit of Dual Shock schlock to the dual-analog controller -- that means grips and a two-row shoulder button configuration. It's expected to hit Japan sometime this Summer which could mean a Christmas-time launch elsewhere should the stars align.

Electronic Arts has announced the upcoming release of a number of Wii titles set to make use of MotionPlus, to be published under the EA Sports label.
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 and EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis will be the first two products to utilise the Wii remote's increased functionality. They will be followed by EA Sports Active in May, along with four other titles currently in development and set for a release later this year.
"On the Wii, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 and EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis bring the authentic motion and excitement of championship golf and tennis to life for fans of all ages and skill levels," said Peter Moore, president, EA Sports.
"With the new Wii MotionPlus, slicing a winner on Centre Court at Wimbledon or dropping an 8 iron pin high on No. 17 at TPC Sawgrass have never felt better. We couldn't be more excited about the dynamic new EA Sports experiences coming this year to the Wii."

The short story is Korogashi Puzzle Katamari isn’t like Katamari Damacy it all. As 1up pointed out it looks like Pac-Attack, but it isn’t exactly Pac-Attack.
Pac-Attack has players drop blocks, stack up ghosts, and position Pac-Man pieces to eat the ghosts after they turn blue. You need to line up a few ghosts to get them to change color.
Korogashi Puzzle Katamari does away with the color changing. You just need to align blocks and junk. When you place a katamari piece the Prince will roll in whatever direction the arrow points and follow a trail of stuff until he reaches the bottom. Square bricks fall to the ground after the Prince makes a star. If the falling blocks complete a horizontal line they vanish a la Tetris. New blocks held by the Katamari cousins appear on the right side of the touch screen. The cousins are slowly drawn to the black hole on the top of the screen so unlike Pac-Attack you get a couple of choices for your next block.
The downloadable game has two modes Endless and Challenge where you need to make stars with a certain number or certain type of object. Namco Bandai will release this in Japan first for only 500 DSiWare Points ($5). Puzzle Katamari sounds like a shoe in game for the US DSiWare too.

Cell phone, Wii and iPhone development aren't normally the sorts of things that gamers associate with id Software, but the company has a history of creating outside the scope of top-tier PC gaming.
That's why it's not too surprising to read that John Carmack, id co-founder, says the company is looking at Wii development alongside its iPhone plans. Carmack tells MTV Multiplayer that he spends "far more time playing Wii with my four year-old boy than I do with any other game console."
That doesn't mean the company's "id Tech 5" racer-shooter Rage will be coming to Wii, however.

Nintendo is trying to give mathematics a makeover by partnering with MATHCOUNTS, a nonprofit organization that promotes math education. Between now and March 25, MATHCOUNTS is challenging its middle school math clubs across the country to boost their membership in a quest to win Nintendo DS systems and copies of the new Personal Trainer: Math software.
MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes mathematics at more than 48,000 middle schools in every U.S. state and territory. Personal Trainer: Math plays on the portable Nintendo DS system and includes more than 40 fun, fast-paced math exercises, from basic addition and subtraction to more extensive multiplication tables and calculation ladders. Up to 16 players with Nintendo DS systems can wirelessly race to finish their problems, even if only one player has a game card.
Nintendo will provide Nintendo DS systems and an equal number of Personal Trainer™: Math software to MATHCOUNTS. How many? (2 x 4 x 5 x 2)! You figure it out. As an incentive to get clubs to participate and increase membership, MATHCOUNTS will randomly select four schools with at least 12 participating students in their MATHCOUNTS Club Programs to each receive 20 Nintendo DS systems and 20 copies of Personal Trainer: Math.
"Anything that gets kids more interested in math helps prepare them for whatever careers they eventually choose," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Personal Trainer: Math is great in a competitive club environment."
"Math teaches kids how to solve problems creatively and develop critical-thinking skills that will help them in the future," said Lou DiGioia, executive director of the MATHCOUNTS Foundation. "Personal Trainer: Math will be another helpful tool that students in our programs can use to make learning mathematics fun, exciting and challenging."

News/release from sverx
Hi! XM7Play new version today, r2009-004.
1) Based on libXM7 beta 0.93, so now the support of XM effects is complete
2) The included sample optimizer is also complete, so now the samples that are likely to have detuning problems will be manipulated to play as they should. (affect samples with loops... of course it's possible to disable the optimizer, just like it was before)
3) ... no Graphical UI. Contact me if you're interested in writing one!
Important: the section "Getting the most of your tune" of the libXM7 documentation has been rewritten... read the previous post for details.
