When people line for Wii pre-orders, chances are it will be a success. And when stores start putting up signs offering to purchase those consoles at prices slightly higher than retail, you know in your heart of hearts that the new console is going to flatten and destroy Japan. The Nintendo-centric Super Potato in Den-Den Town has put up notice that it will purchase "used" Wiis for 1,000 yen above the 25,000 fixed sticker price. Not expecting Yahoo! Auction craziness, but rather, consoles snapped up fast and sequestered away to people's homes for the upcoming New Year's holidays.

Rising Star Games has revealed that it's to publish another Bubble Bobble game for the Nintendo DS in Q1 2007.
Bubble Bobble Double Shot (see what they did) introduces a third platform-hopping bubble-popping character called Bubu to the traditional duo of Bub and Bob, and promises "a respectful return to the series' roots".
That means we're getting the "essence" of Bubble Bobble platforming with "a smattering of non-intrusive additions". Like Bubu.
So for example, you'll still find yourself platforming through compact levels brimming with secrets, spread across two screens, but now you'll also be using the right shoulder button to switch between Bub, Bob and Bubu, because certain enemies can only be taken down by certain characters.
This system is based on colours - and there will also be a new star bubble that lets you change the colour of enemies on-screen so your selected character can tackle them all.
What's more, Rising Star says the "continue" mechanic has been changed so that you're now asked to complete touch-based mini-games when you perish in order to carry on playing - like solving a puzzle, or tapping the screen quickly so escape from a rampaging monster.
On top of the single-player antics, which amount to 100 levels, there will also be co-operative multiplayer for up to three people.

While we initially felt Wal-Mart was being a bit old fashioned by not allowing Wii demo kiosks to be setup in stores due to "safety concerns," Walton and friends apparently had a good bit of foresight that we weren't aware of. After numerous reports of television sets getting the axe, and an innocently bystanding HP iPAQ getting all cracked up, we're wondering if folks aren't just staging their own Wiincidents at this point. Apparently warning everyone of how jeopardous these free-flying Wiimotes can be wasn't really taken to heart, as now a butterfingered gamer has quite an interesting tale to tell to the presumably skeptical insurance adjuster. While busting a few moves in Wii Sports, the nonsensical user let the controller fly, but instead of landing softly (and harmlessly) on the couch, it rocketed straight through his window, leaving a fairly dangerous scene as proof of gaming negligence. C'mon folks, we've warned you all enough by now, either strap on that thoughtfully included wrist strap, grab some sticky gloves, or tape up the windows -- your property, your call.

Playing Wii adds up to fairly intense exertion? "If people are finding themselves sore, they may need to exercise more," says Nintendo
12 Comments"It's harder than playing basketball," says a 12-year-old American girl after a session on the Wii in a Wall Street Journal report.
Jeremy Scherer and his wife spent three hours playing Wii Sports: "I was using muscles I hadn't used in a while," said Scherer, who describes himself as "not very active." He's now vowing nightly "Wii workouts" to get in better shape.
Nintendo's Perrin Kaplan has no sympathy though, saying, "It was not meant to be a Jenny Craig supplement (a firm that offers weight management programs). If people are finding themselves sore, they may need to exercise more."
Customs broker Ryan Mercer (who lifts weights the article points out) is also finding it heavy going, "I was soaking wet with sweat, head to toe -- I had to go take a shower." The next morning he had trouble putting his shirt on...
How are you finding the Wii experience? Let us know below.

Lick posted this news/release:
I've been building an iPod-look-a-like music player for the DS. I have implemented the ClickWheel(TM) completely, and now I'll be working on the menu, and then I'll add playback of the MP3 and OGG formats.
I know that Apple won't like this. I'm thinking of making the player -skinnable- and use a different default skin. Also, I could release it with a message like: "If you like this software, buy an iPod! We LOVE APPLE!"
(wip-build, showcases the ClickWheel implementation)
It still runs on emulators right now, but will not later.
- Use touchscreen to control the ClickWheel.
- Press X to reset to bootmenu.
Enjoy, you almost have an iPod

Smashbros.com updated today with some screenshots as well as a movie from the upcoming game Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
The movie reveals that Fox McCloud will return to the game along with his Starfox Command DS looks. Mr. Masahiro Sakurai also states that he's still hard at work on the game.
Check out the screens at the official site here.
Fox was pretty much a no-brainer, though I hope they do add Falco back into the mix as he was my favorite to use.

Because turnabout is fair play, recently we showed Punch Jumps's video of their PS3 with busted disc feeder and now we present to you the vomiting Wii.
Loading mechanisms have become a little bit of a personal issue since my 8 month-old Xbox 360's loading tray busted and Microsoft wants to charge $139 (plus having to provide own box and paying shipping) to fix it. Stupid thing is less than a year old. Microsoft apparently doesn't have authorized repair centers around the country like Nintendo does. All busted Xbox 360s in the U.S. must be sent to Texas, where they are miraculously healed and sent back again. What's wrong with the PS2 redesign where the top just pops up, you place the disc in the system, close it up and no easily defective loading mechanism gets in the way?

Are your Mii's lonely? Do they need some other company to hang out with? Some stranger who randomly wanders over from another Wii for a cheap one night stand? Well, this may be the answer to your prayers.
Mii Pages is ostensibly a site set up so you can pick up other peoples Wii player codes and find someone with similar games to play online multiplayer with. It also, however, opens the doors of your Wii to all kinds of unwanted emails and invasion by other people's Miis. I can't help but think that eventually someone will create some kind of hack that will create evil Mii's that run around, eat your hard drive and serial murder all your existing Mii's. Terrifying...

Our very good friend GPF has posted a screenshot of the Links Web Browser working in DS Linux, heres a screenshot:

Heres last nights newspost:
Hi, I finally made some progress with getting graphics enabled in links browser under dslinux and wanted to share it before I went to bed.
links -g -dither-images 1 -display-optimize 1 -html-image-scale 50 www.google.com
My port of gpm to dslinux still needs some work in libgpm, so the mouse isn't working yet. And there are alot of graphicaly problems with fonts, but the graphics show up great if they fit the screen size
Troy(GPF)
Heres todays update:
I have made more progress this evening and have got the mouse working in links now, with some updates to libgpm
so far this seems to be the best way to start it
links -g -dither-images 1 -display-optimize 1 -html-image-scale 90 -menu-font-size 8 -aspect-on 1 -dither-letters 1 -html-user-font-size 8 www.google.com
It's working pretty good so far, still some problems with screen not refreshing and some font problems in the menus and occasionally in the screen.
The good thing is if you don't specifigy -g when starting links, it works as before except if GPM is running, you can use the text console mouse

There was a showdown between the Nintendo Wii and the Sony PlayStation 3 at The Post's game testing lab last weekend.
Here's how it went down: I invited a bunch of my friends, five guys and three gals, over to check out the new systems. Few of them play or care about video games, but they were all curious to see the PlayStation 3, the cutting-edge game console that sparked real-world mayhem on its release Friday.
The Nintendo Wii system controls use motion-detecting technology. In a tennis game, the wireless control can be swung like a racket. (By Shizuo Kambayashi -- Associated Press)
By comparison, most of my friends arrived having heard little about Nintendo's new system. But, as it turned out, that device was the hit of the party.
Here's the deal with Nintendo's Wii system, in case you missed it. The system's controls contain motion-detecting technology. In some games, you don't have to punch any buttons to play. In a tennis game, for example, you swing the wireless controller like a racket. When you hit a ball in the game, the controller shudders as if you'd hit a real ball. The controllers also contain speakers that make a satisfying "thwok" whenever you connect.
It's the same for the bowling, baseball and boxing games designed for the system. Players in all those games use motions with their hands, arms and wrists that roughly replicate the movements you'd make in the real world.
The graphics on the Wii aren't the system's strong suit, however. One of my friends, who liked the system, summed up its games' looks as "cheesy."
Speaking of graphics, I gave the PS3 an unfair advantage in this department. You could have called it a fixed fight if my friends had fallen for the new PlayStation over the Wii because the $600 Sony system was running on a new $4,500, 50-inch plasma TV set from Pioneer, borrowed from the company just for this test. The $250 Nintendo, meanwhile, was running on an old tube set half the size of the plasma screen.
It was that tube set that got most of the traffic. While the people in my group preferred looking at the PS3's games, they preferred playing the Wii.
My friends played the Wii's sports games against each other all weekend, using goofy, cartoony avatars called "Miis" that they constructed to represent themselves in the game. Give a couple of newlyweds a pair of Wii controllers, pop in the boxing game and the entertainment value is priceless. We started out playing the game sitting down, but eventually we took to our feet to get a better range of motion with the controllers.
I have never seen a bunch of non-gamers get into this stuff like this, and I have never heard anybody laugh so much while playing any video game. A few of them now say they plan to buy the system for themselves.
My friend Andy has always seemed to dislike video games, but he was immediately taken by the Nintendo system in a way that I -- and he -- did not expect. "I'm surprised by how much I like it," he said. "The controller is so intuitive."
A few minutes later, he was cursing the PS3. Most of my friends who picked up the PS3's controller ended up frustrated. The typical game for the system requires players to have memorized where all the buttons are, and it's much harder to just pick up a controller and have a good time. Some of the verdicts they offered are unprintable.
My friend Jon, a technophile who likes racing games, reached first for the PS3 and wrestled with the menus and controls for the driving game Ridge Racer. Eventually, we played some races on the system and enjoyed some crisp and realistic-looking racetrack scenarios. But, for a while, he gave up on that and watched Andy and me fall over the furniture as we boxed each other on the Nintendo system. "I'm having more fun just watching you guys play that," he said.
Jon gave the PS3 a thumbs up in at least one area. He was eventually impressed with the quality of the Blu-ray movie format when we watched "Talladega Nights," the movie that Sony is including with the first shipments of the PS3.
The Nintendo Wii system controls use motion-detecting technology. In a tennis game, the wireless control can be swung like a racket. (By Shizuo Kambayashi -- Associated Press)
Game developers say the PS3 is so powerful that they haven't exploited the system's full potential. I have no idea what the system is capable of, but I can testify that you have to be pretty sharp-eyed to tell much of a difference between the first batch of PS3 games and Xbox 360 versions of the same titles.
When it comes to accessing all of the multimedia features that Sony is promoting with its console . . . well, I still prefer the Xbox 360's approach.
With the Xbox 360, a Microsoft product, using the interface and getting online has been easy and almost as intuitive as using an iPod. Trying to get online with the PS3, on the other hand, was a vale of tears because I didn't have a USB-compatible keyboard to plug into the console, and using the game controller to enter my user information was a tedious process that I gave up on twice.
Imagine filling out a mortgage application on a cellphone. It's something like that.
So I headed out of town for Thanksgiving to spend some time with my girlfriend's family. Just to be safe, I locked away the expensive and hard-to-find PS3 in an undisclosed location, where it is being guarded by ninjas and feral dogs. The thing has some features I look forward to exploring some more, but that can wait.
The Wii, on the other hand, rode shotgun with me for some show-and-tell action because Nintendo got one feature right with the system on Day One:
It's just darn fun.

"While the new controller on the Wii is proving to be a success, it's turning out to be more effort than some die-hard couch potatoes bargained for. The Wall Street Journal reports on the newest workout regime for nerds."
From the article: "In Rochester, Minn., Jeremy Scherer and his wife spent three hours playing tennis and bowling, two of the games included with the Wii. Mr. Scherer says he managed to improve his scores — at the cost of shoulders and back that were still aching the next day. 'I was using muscles I hadn't used in a while,' says Mr. Scherer, a computer programmer who describes himself as 'not very active.' Mr. Scherer is vowing nightly 'Wii workouts' to get in better shape."

Wii rules Yahoo Buzz Index
It's pretty evident by now that Nintendo Wii is the hot item this holiday season, even more so than PS3 or certainly Xbox 360.
Sales prove it, talk shows it, and so do the latest rankings in the Yahoo Buzz Index. Nintendo's next-gen console ranked as the number 2 Top Tech Mover, bested only by Microsoft's Zune.
PlayStation 3 came in at #3, #4, and #7. This is due to variations in how people are searching for Sony's console Xbox 360 trailed the pack with the 10th spot.
The full list of movers and shakers in the tech category is as follows:
1. Zune: +880%
2. Nintendo Wii: +205%
3. Playstation 3: +145%
4. PS3: +133%
5. Nintendo: +112%
6. MP3 players: +94%
7. Play Station 3: +86%
8. iPod Nano: +71%
9. Xbox: +54%
10. Xbox 360: +49%

ttursas has again updated his homebrew game for the DS, heres whats new:
What's new in v0.1.7:
* Updated libcartreset to v0.72.
* Removed -ansi from the server makefile's gcc options.
* Made turbo boost a little slower.
* Halved the damage the planes take from colliding with each other.
* The network I/O is now also handled in the plane selection screen. Before it wasn't
and would lead to a timeout.
* All planes have white base color. Before each player would have its own base color,
but most colors just didn't work well.
* Made the gravity 25% stronger.
* If the player changes the plane while connected to the server (but no game is on),
the plane selection is sent to the server automatically.
* The online status of the other players is also shown on the play menu screen.
* Added sparkle and dark smoke particles.
* When a plane is low on energy, it'll start emitting dark smoke and sparkles.
* The weapons do now 33% less damage than before.
* Compressed network update packets.
...
v0.1.7 is mainly a bugfix release with also fixes in the playability. Expect more features
in v0.1.8 (like cooler HUD, smarter AI, and something extra as well).

Reviews have been slow in coming for Konductra, the new DS puzzler from indie developer oeFun. Maybe the horrifically boring all-about video we showed you not long ago put everyone off. Or it could have been the yawnariffic gameplay. We're open to examining multiple possibilities here. Nearly every aspect of Konductra is raked over the coals in these reviews -- the methodology of gameplay, the missing element of risk that makes puzzle games exciting, and even the production values. In other words? Eminently skippable. But is it less fun because we've seen other, more exciting puzzlers on the DS, or is the gameplay itself flawed? Read on.
IGN - 65%: Konductra gives you too much control. In other puzzlers, blocks or tiles assault the playing field relentlessly - cascading into the pit in Tetris, or crashing down from orbit in Meteos. It's constant. It doesn't stop. Playing those games is playing for survival, trying to manage the stack and keep from being overwhelmed. Konductra isn't Tetris or Meteos, and no direct comparison is implied. Those games are simply used as examples to illustrate a quality Konductra lacks - a sense of danger.
Worth Playing - 50%: As a puzzle game, Konductra isn't expected to be a graphical powerhouse, and it isn't. The menu screens are graphically unimpressive and unwieldy (rather than simply picking an option, you must "highlight" it as if you were playing the game). The game board itself is simplistic and rather dull to look at, with only four colors and a non-existent background ... Konductra does manage to pull off a pretty good soundtrack. Trance-like peppy music plays over the gameplay, oddly out of sync with some of the early gameplay, although it does a better job of matching more intense difficulty levels. One nice addition is the game's full-voiced tutorial, although the game is not really complex enough to require such a detailed feature.
GameSpot - 42%: Even with seemingly so much going on in any given game, Konductra is boring and lifeless. A little personality could have helped matters, but the bare-bones presentation is unremarkable. There are no alternating skins, so you're stuck with a generic pulsing blue background surrounded by bland grey-and-white conductors. The blocks are shimmery and colorful, but no nicer than any number of free Flash PC games on the Internet. Accompanying it all is a small set of grating MIDI techno tunes that will make you glad you have the option to turn off the music.
Overall verdict? Ouch. But when there are so many brilliant handheld puzzlers, it's bound to be difficult for anything else to make a splash unless it's just as good, and it looks like Konductra simply isn't
