Without its line of Game Boy handhelds, Nintendo would likely not be in the position it is today. When the company went head-to-head with Sony's PlayStation 2 and Microsoft's Xbox with the GameCube, the result was disastrous for the one-time gaming leader.
Thankfully the company had the Game Boy Advance and more recently the Nintendo DS--both of which have helped keep Nintendo's wallet fat. While Nintendo tries to get back into the console race with the Wii, no one can dispute that the company dominates the handheld market.
Though the DS looks to shape the future of Nintendo's handhelds, the company believes its predecessor, though dated, still has some legs to stand on. Speaking at the Reuters Media Summit in New York, Nintendo of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime said, "We think that Game Boy Advance certainly has at least one more holiday season left in it."
In fact, Fils-Aime says, the GBA is still essential to Nintendo's plan as a "gateway console."
"For us, it continues to be a great stepping stone for five-, six-, seven-year old consumers to have their first great handheld gaming experience and then transition right into DS," Fils-Aime told Reuters.
According to the executive, sales of both the DS and GBA are expected to meet company expectations this year.

Reggie Fils-Aime has said that American gamers can expect Super Mario Galaxy any time between the end of March and next Christmas.
Speaking to MTV News, Fils-Aime said that Metroid Prime: Corruption is going to be next in the batch of big Nintendo releases, following WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Wii Play (both January) and Mario Party 8 (March).
He also offered some idea of what consumers can expect from Virtual Console. "On every Monday, you can expect between one and five titles... essentially on an ongoing basis," he explained.
And they're working on the rights issues that are keeping games like GoldenEye away, too. "Suffice it to say we would love to see it, so we're exploring all the rights issues," the Nintendo of America boss told MTV.
But what of online gaming? "The first online game will be Pokémon Battle Revolution in Japan, so that is certainly a candidate [to be first] in the US." MTV then hints at other titles. "For the consumer who is saying, 'Gosh, when is Nintendo going to get on board with online play?' The answer is very early in 2007," Fils-Aime specified.
But what's this about arrogance, you're wondering. Apparently it's the difference between Nintendo and Sony and Microsoft. "Are we feeling good about our success? Do we think we can have more success in the future? Absolutely," he began.
"I do think that highlights a difference between us and our competitors: We're not arrogant. We don't view success as a right. We feel we need to earn success every day. And we're going to do that by being true to the gamer." Handbags!
As if to prove the point, he noted that he'll be off to Japan, cap in hand, to do some "lobbying" of his bosses in January. We're told to expect a "plethora" of Wii announcements around then.
One thing he won't be bringing back with him though is the DVD-playing Nintendo Wii, which was mooted a while ago. Asked by MTV whether Wii-DVD coming to the US any time soon, he responded simply: "The answer is no."

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has said that North American gamers can expect Mario's first Wii adventure, Super Mario Galaxy in shops between the end of March and next Christmas, in an interview with MTV.com.
The Nintendo boss also revealed when we can expect the next "meaty adventure" game for Wii Metroid Prime: Corruption, which will apparently arrive with the next batch of big releases following WarioWare: Smooth Moves and Wii Play in January, and Mario Party 8 in March.
In the interview Reggie also commented on Nintendo's plans for Virtual Console releases, explaining that "on every Monday, you can expect between one and five titles... essentially on an ongoing basis," So at the very least we'll have one Mario game to play before next Christmas, old or new.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has revealed Nintendo's efforts to bring N64 classic Goldeneye 007 to the Wii Virtual Console, in an interview with MTV.com.
"Would I love to see it on virtual console? Absolutely. But there are a lot of issues there," the Nintendo boss said, adding that there's still a chance that we'll be shooting up Facility on the Wii: "Suffice it to say we would love to see it, so we're exploring all the rights issues."
It goes without saying there's a lot of legal tip-toeing to be done before Goldeneye reaches Nintendo's download service, as original developer Rare is now sheaved under the Microsoft cloak and the Bond game license is now in the hands of Activision.
Still, it's not impossible and we'll certainly be keeping our fingers crossed for Wii remote-mine flinging nostalgia - and no one's allowed to be Oddjob.

Red Steel is probably the Wii launch game you'll pick up after Twilight Princess on December 8, if you've got enough cash left over.
The French-based publisher has been making a lot of noise about its unique first-person slicer leading up to the launch. And it seems that a sequel is already under way in France as the firm is looking for a senior game designer to work on a follow-up.

Nintendo has declared that it is now the leader in the UK's home console and handheld markets, with the DS now outselling the PSP by a rate of more than 2.5 to 1.
According to Chart Track data, more than 2 million DS units have now been sold in the UK. Sales have continued to boom following the release of the Lite five months ago, and the success of titles such as Brain Training, Animal Crossing and New Super Mario Bros. - all of which have topped the 1 million sales mark in Europe.
"The ability of Nintendo DS to appeal to both gamers and non-gamers alike through an exciting, fun and innovative portfolio of software has been instrumental in its success in the UK," said David Yarnton, general manager of Nintendo UK.
"Nintendo DS will continue to be the main driving force behind the expansion of the video game market this year."
Lisa Morgan, CEO of high street retailer GAME, added, "Nintendo DS has played an increasingly important part of our business in 2006.
"Not only is the DS performing really well, but Nintendo are following through on their promise of expanding the gaming audience, which is key to GAME too. This is evident in the broad range of people coming into our stores to purchase both DS hardware and software."
Nintendo is currently gearing up for its next hardware release - the Wii, already a sell-out hit in North America, will launch across Europe on December 8.

Known as EQ Trainer (through Google translation), the game's goal is not to measure how smart you are, but to measure your emotions and how you feel. How does the game measure your emotions, you ask? Well, apparently there are 3 game modes by which this is done. Solving problems is one method, with another, loosely-translated explanation for the second being "[the player] can forge four fields such as identifying and understanding the feeling respectively." The third way seems to be a kind of progressive chart, which has measured, and will measure, all of your emotions and forms a consistent reading.
A quirky title, but for such a dynamic platform as the DS, as well as previous titles taking full advantage of the system to offer non-conventional games, are we that surprised to see something of this nature crop up? Honestly, no, and for us here at DS Fanboy, we're kind of peeved we do not know Japanese and the odds of this title being localized are so slim as to be invisible.

That's right. And the DS Lite is set to be reborn as a kitchen aid-cum-refrigerator ornament. To coincide with NCL's latest edutainment venture -- which is in essence a sequel to Shaberu! Oryouri Navi* -- the DS Lite Magnet Stand (as in, a stand which contains a magnet, and can thereby stand attached to a fridge door) will be released in Japan next week at ¥1200 (about US$10).
Presumably, this is to facilitate easy consultation when Japanese housewives are working their kitchen magic with the help of Kenkou Ouen Recipe 1000 DS Kondate Zenshuu (or, as we'd put it, "The Complete 1000-Recipe Healthy Eating Guide"). Or perhaps it's been designed to distract the portly gamer from reaching for so many refreshments. Either way, it's for the good of your body. And your body is your temple. Keep it clean. Over.
*More e-book than game, Shaberu! Oryouri Navi (which we'd translate as "Audio Cooking Guide") compiles more than 200 popular recipes and guides users through the whole process of making grub. It was, in fact, released in Japan in July of this year and continues to sell steadily.

The Nintendo Wii is the latest in a series of console systems to hit the market. While the graphics and processing power do not match the PS3 or Xbox 360, the Wii has attracted the interest of gamers due to its revolutionary controller design. By combining Bluetooth, infrared, and motion detection technology into a compact handheld remote, the Wii has complete changed the ways that gamers interact with their systems. Ironically, this paradigm shift in controllers was not for the hardcore gamer, but instead was meant to bring in the new user who traditionally has found the multi-button two-handed controller a bit overwhelming. In fact, my five year old daughter learned how to use the controller in only a few minutes and was soon happily, if not ecstatically, beating the computer in a boxing match. The Wii may finally bring console system gaming into the family oriented mainstream.
While the controller design is one of the key selling points for the Wii, there are other aspects and features that make it popular for neophyte gamers. For example, you can create a Mii and then have Mii parades with your friends online. Other online activities include updated news and weather services, as well as messaging, web surfing, image sharing and more. In addition to this, users of the Wii can download legacy games from the Wii store, as well as obtain updates that are promised to include DVD players and more. The point is that the Wii is an internet appliance as much as it is a console, which means it needs an internet connection to fully realize it's potential.
However, what if your Wii is nowhere near your network drop? Or your wireless network is on the other side of the house? Granted, the Wii does try to maximize its wireless connectivity via the integration of two antennas in its design, but even this won't overcome all obstacles. This is why we decided to provide an online tutorial to illustrate how you can upgrade your wireless presence via the use of a bigger and more powerful antenna. With this design, the question shifts from "How close to I have to be?" to "How far can I really go?"
The Wireless Network Card
The Wii comes with an embedded wireless network card from Broadcom. This card is an 802.11b/g card that can connect to most of the 802.11 wireless access points on the market. In addition to supporting the higher speed 802.11g speeds, the wireless card supports the most current encryption options, including WPA2 Personal with AES encryption. For those who are not versed in all the acronyms of the wireless world, WPA2 Personal is the best protection available for the home user. And thanks to an intelligent wireless configuration setup, most users will simply click a few buttons, enter the passphrase, and be online.

Two new Genesis games -- Ecco the Dolphin and Golden Axe -- are now available for download at 800 Wii points each.
We can't be sure that these games didn't go up some time after Super Star Soldier late last night, but it seems that they actually hit sometime earlier today. Combined with last week's late launch of TurboGrafx-16 games on the Virtual Console, this makes two times that Nintendo has missed its stated goal to make "new Virtual Console games ... become available weekly every Monday. [Emphasis added]"
Is this a sign that we should now expect Virtual Console launches to come at any time throughout the week, or is Nintendo just running into some early technical glitches in its "Virtual Console Mondays" plan? You'll know the answer as soon as we do.

Before the Wii arrived in stores last week, Nintendo said it would add new titles to its Virtual Console downloadable game service each Monday following the launch. Yesterday one new title arrived on the Virtual Console, the 1990 TurboGrafx-16 shooter Super Star Soldier.
A vertically scrolling sci-fi shoot-'em-up, Super Star Soldier is being offered for 600 Wii points ($6). Developed by Hudson, the game offers players a number of genre staples, including spread cannon, flame thrower, and electricity gun power-ups, as well as homing missiles and satellite ships to absorb stray enemy fire.
Super Star Soldier brings the number of Virtual Console games available to 15, with a total of 30 expected to be up on the service by the end of the year. The game is rated E for Everyone.

Earlier this month, the Wii was sent up on the popular cartoon South Park. Now, eight days after Nintendo's console went on sale in the US, another Comedy Central show is also using the platform to produce mass mirth.
Last night on the Colbert Report, increasingly influential satirist Stephen Colbert used the Wii to take a jab at a political opponent--literally. First, the console was named the number-one menace in the show's ongoing "Threatdown" segment, as Colbert called the "Wiiiiii! ... the most addicting video game (sic) of all time."
After taunting "nerds" seeking the hard-to-find console, the faux-conservative pundit--admitted and former Dungeons and Dragons player--engaged in a Wii Sports boxing match. His opponent? A Mii mock-up of the incoming Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-California), whom he roundly pummeled on air with his own Mii avatar.
The Wii Colbert Report is currently viewable on

Gamestation, HMV, and Game all announce their launch-night shenanigans.
The wait for a Wii is almost over for UK gamers. Eager British Nintendans had to watch the US launch of the console on November 19, and the Japanese launch will also pass them by on December 2. However, next Friday, December 8, Nintendo's next-gen console will finally hit the shelves across most of Europe.
That isn't soon enough for some, though--with preorders on Amazon UK selling out within minutes, and the Christmas season fast approaching, some dedicated gamers will no doubt be standing in front of the store waiting for the very second the console will be released. These hardcore fans will be relieved to know that the UK and Ireland won't be missing out on midnight launch fun. Today, three major British and Irish gaming retailers revealed their plans for the evening of December 7.
Game will be holding midnight events at its Oxford Street, London, and Dublin, Ireland, branches only. The two events will feature music, entertainment, competitions, free pizza, and demonstration Wii pods to play on. Game's marketing director, Anna Macario, said, "We are anticipating huge crowds of customers will come to our Oxford Street [and Dublin] store to get their hands on their Nintendo Wii at the first possible moment."
As far as UK-only events, Gamestation will be hosting parties at its Birmingham and Edinburgh stores. At the Birmingham New Street branch, local radio station Kerrang DJs will be spinning tracks, models will be serving food, and there will be competitions including a play-off in each of the store windows to win a Wii. There will also be a guest appearance by Nintendo icon "Mario"--either an impersonator or (more likely) a CG re-creation--via a satellite link with the US. Both events are expected to start at around 10 p.m. and finish up at around 2 a.m.
The main official Nintendo event is still under wraps, but the company has revealed to GameSpot that it will take place at the Oxford Street HMV store and will feature an appearance by an as-yet-unconfirmed Nintendo executive. "There'll be all kinds of exciting things going on," a spokesperson said.

The very popular American comedian and satirist Stephen Colbert pulled out the Nintendo wii on one of my favorite segments of the show, The Threat Down.
Instead of Bears or Walmart this time, the number 1 threat was the Nintendo Wii. He claims it's too addicting. Colbert demonstrates the Wii Sports Boxing title by... well watch and see .
You can view the video on Comedy Centrals "Mother Load" here. (he shows off the Wii towards the end)
