WiiConnect 24 Update Breaking Systems?
Be careful what you wish for, you just might get a broken Wii.
We have received word from numerous sources that running the initial WiiConnect 24 update on the Wii has had a tendency to cause a recurring error code. Several error codes have been reported so far, but the most prevalent of them are 110213 and 32002. We contacted Nintendo about this issue, and they filled us in on what you should do if you find yourself in this predicament.
Currently, Nintendo has two options in place to resolve the problem. If you do not have any data saved to your system that is important to keep, then you can contact Nintendo customer service and they will ship a new console to you in 3-4 business days. However, if you do have important data saved to your system, then things get a little trickier. Data like game saves and Miis are not disastrous to lose, but Virtual Console data is. While Virtual Console games are re-downloadable should you delete them, the data saved on your console regarding which games you have downloaded is tied to your system. In this situation, option #2 is the way to go.
Option #2 requires that Nintendo send you a shipping label which should take 4-10 business days. Once you receive the shipping label, you can use it to send the console to Nintendo for repairs, after which they will send it back to you. Sadly, this process takes 8-12 business days, meaning that if you choose option #2, you will be Wii-less for a good long while.
Nintendo could not comment on how widespread this problem is, but did say that they are currently looking into fixes that can be done without Nintendo replacing or repairing the console itself.

Retailer tells analysts both Sony and Nintendo have already delivered their second shipments of newly released consoles, talks tie ratios of both.
One of the biggest hitches with Microsoft's Xbox 360 launch last year was a dearth of follow-up shipments that left the game maker unable to make its next-gen system readily available to consumers until months after launch.
Sony and Nintendo might manage to avoid that problem, as GameStop today indicated that last weekend's launches of the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii sold out, but more units are on the way. In an investor conference call tied to the retailer's third quarter earnings report, GameStop executives confirmed that that have already been resupplied with both systems, and they expect to get more of each on a weekly basis.
The executives also recapped the launch performances of the two systems. For the PS3, Sony's Resistance: Fall of Man and Electronic Arts' Madden NFL 07 were the biggest sellers, while Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Ubisoft's Red Steel stood out from the pack of Wii launch titles.
However, game sales were stronger on the Wii, with GameStop sporting a tie ratio of 3 games sold for every system, compared to the PS3's tie ratio of 1.5 games for each system. The shortfall on Sony's system was attributed to more people picking up the system on its own in order to turn around and sell it for a premium. As those systems find their ways into the hands of "real gamers," the execs said the PS3 tie ratio should increase.
GameStop's higher-ups noted that their chain historically has the highest tie ratio of any retailer in the country, but estimated that they were still shorted on hardware allocation by both Sony and Nintendo. While GameStop and its EB Games brand collectively account for about 25 percent of the US gaming market, the company believes it didn't receive that much of either system's day-one shipments. Executives said that they've never been satisfied with their launch day allocation of any new machine, but added their main concern now is the flow of follow-up shipments--which both Sony and Nintendo have promised will come at a steady pace.

ttursas has again updated his homebrew game for the DS, heres whats new:
* Optimized collision checks.
* Added preliminary AI turrets. The AI is distributed evenly over the connected clients.
* Increased the default network send frameskip to 5.
* Client timeouts and exits are handled nicer now.
A short list, but the auto distributed AI load justifies a new release. Anyway, this is the one we'll be playing tomorrow at the Finnish IDGA pub night, and drinking all that free beer sponsored by Recoil Games! Yay!
Anyway, about the AI, if you are wondering, the calculations are distributed so that each connected client (player) will calculate roughly as much AI stuff as everybody else. If someone timeouts, no problem, the load is automatically redistributed. Works nicely on my two DS's... Let's see tomorrow how it'll work with more.

Bronto posted this news:
While hunting that nasty bug I mentioned, I rewrote large parts and dropped PAlib. However, it did not fix _the_ problem, but probably fixes some others .. and the .nds file is smaller. I also made some cosmetic changes to the ui. I'm still not too happy with the buttons, if anyone has some nice buttons, please let me know
I ordered no$gba-debug, hope this will help me finally fix _the_ problem.

Looks like the game did not recover from its less-than-stellar showing at E3. With two of the three largest game reviewing outlets slapping the game silly in their reviews, are we to believe the game is that bad? What do you fine and intelligent readers who picked the game up already say?
Gamespot - 55%: "Red Steel isn't completely devoid of merit, but it's a half-baked, buggy game that feels rushed and poorly executed. There's a good concept in here somewhere, as a swords-and-guns shooter pitting you against yakuza villains certainly seems like it could be very exciting. However, the experience itself hardly fulfills any of the promises behind it. So if you're looking for an exciting new way to simulate gunning or cutting lots of dudes down using the Wii Remote, you'd best keep looking."
eToychest - 78%: "However, despite its faults, the long and short of it is that Red Steel is a fun first-person shooter, and hopefully a decent indicator of where developers will be able to take this genre on the Wii. The title controls extremely fluid, and is likely to draw praise from those PC gamers who up until now have been turned off by how the first-person shooter genre has been portrayed on the home console market. This is certainly one of the stronger titles for the Wii's retail debut, and while certainly not for everyone, is still a commendable example of the immersive experiences the Wii is capable of conveying."
1UP - 50%: "Don't be fooled into thinking Red Steel reinvents the FPS. It's nothing more than a ho-hum shooter with a creative but flawed gimmick stapled on. Sure, it might not steal the launch lineup, but at least it proves this type of game is welcome on the Wii."

Being in the inner circle of several gaming publications, I often get wind of rumours and supposed "plans" that never happen. However, I made it my personal mission to investigate as many as possible.
Today, I heard from the PR agency of a company rather close to Nintendo (who must remain nameless) that there's going to be a very exciting Wii launch in the UK - and it's going to be announced this week.
After making more calls around, I can confirm that the UK retailer Gamestation has been chosen by Nintendo to help them give the console a European launch to remember.
Gamestation is no stranger to deals with the big gaming companies - just weeks ago we reported that their entire lower floor of one store became the Microsoft section - painted green, with over 16 360s playable, both in and out of demo units.
The Wii Launch is set to happen at two Gamestation Stores - Birmingham New Street; the largest in the country, and where the Xbox Floor is, and for all the Scots their Edinburgh store will also be holding an event.
Considering this what Microsoft did to the store just generally, not even for a launch party, it'll be extremely exciting to see what happens. Gamestation's Head Office confirmed that both stores would be opening at Midnight, and there would be an invite-only party to celebrate the Wii launch as customers pick up their consoles from the store. Rumours right now point to a huge party with Nintendo Executives in attendance. Perhaps the main floor of the store will be redecorated to feature the Wii like the Xbox Basement?
The Birmingham store told us that they had around 400 preorders, and believed they would be getting more consoles than this; so if you want to be to be a part of UK gaming history and pick up a Wii at the UK's official Wii launch party, be at Birmingham New Street at 11:59 on December 7th!
We’ve already got our invite sorted, and we’ll be there with still and video cameras to document the party.
Buzz words all round - Nintendo PR said it would be "exciting, and a fitting launch for the Wii" while a Gamestation spokesperson described it as "incredible."
Gamestation and Nintendo PR declined to give us any further information, but told us that there would be an official announcement this week. Rest assured, the second the press release drops in my inbox, details will be here on RPGSite. Stick with us.

Japan's biggest game magazine has given its opinion on the Wii, and the opinion seems to be, on the whole, positive. A little over a week before the system's 12/2 Japanese release date, Famitsu reviewed the full lineup of launch titles. Here's how the games scored.
Necro Nesia (Spike): 8,7,6,7
Super Monkey Ball (Sega): 8,8,8,7
Wing Island (Hudson): 5,6,6,5
Kororinpa (Hudson): 6,6,6,6
SD Gundam Scud Hammers (Banpresto): 8,8,9,8
Ennichi no Tatsujin (Bandai Namco): 7,7,7,6
Tamagotchi no Pika Pika Daitouryou (Bandai Namco): 7,7,7,5
Red Steel (Ubisoft): 8,9,9,8
Trauma Center (Atlus): 8,9,8,7
Elebits (Konami): 8,8,8,8
Super Swing Golf (Tecmo): 8,7,7,7
Odoru Made in Wario (Nintendo): 8,9,8,9
Zelda Twilight Princess (Nintendo): 9,10,9,10
Crayon Shin Chan (Banpresto): 7,8,7,6
For the interested, the GameCube version of Twilight Princess scored 10, 10, 9, 9 in this issue. All but one of the reviewers were different, so it's hard to say which version the magazine preferred. The reviewer comments seemed to suggest that the GCN version, while lacking some of the freshness of the Wii version, offers a feeling of precise control thanks to the standard control system.

news via movie web
Nintendo has made a decision regarding their Wii console that could boost its popularity even more.
In a story from Video Business, it seems that the gamemaker is going to offer "DVD movie playback" on the new console. Apparently, the Wii will be updated with "the feature in 2007, using a software engine provided by Sonic Solutions."
It seems "back when the Wii was code-named Revolution, DVD playback was part of the specification via a small internal add-on. After last May's Electronic Entertainment Expo, however, DVD compatibility disappeared from the feature list. In September, Nintendo explained the removal as market-driven, as DVD players were so inexpensive and pervasive that the company saw little need to add extra hardware options to the Wii that would drive up the cost for consumers."
There is currently no explanation about why Nintendo decided to make the switch. The company hasn't officially "announced the feature, which was made public in a Sonic press release."

news via spong
Marketing website, Brand Republic, is reporting that Nintendo of Japan has forced its U.K. division to change the forthcoming television ads for the UK Wii launch.
“It is understood that the Japanese video-games company was unhappy with the documentary-style launch ads, created by Leo Burnett, and stepped in to make them "look more like ads", according to a source.
(Ad Agency) Leo Burnett had been expected to handle the launch of the console across Europe. However, UK marketing director Dawn Paine said that the agency would not be working on the pan-European launch campaign, but declined to comment on the identity of the agency tasked with handling the launch.”
SPOnG has contacted Nintendo for comment and we’ve been sent the press statement post-haste. It says, ““Nintendo UK is very pleased with the Wii TV advertising campaign that Leo Burnetts UK have created. We have decided to run this campaign, which conveys the emotional response and sheer fun factor that Wii delivers in the New Year when we broaden our communication to a wider audience from gamer to non gamer alike."
That’s OK then.

Newly released today:

Jump Ultimate Stars is the sequel to one of the best selling games of 2005, Jump Super Stars. It is the second collaboration between Nintendo of Japan and Jump magazine, this time incorporating 300 characters from 40 Shonen Jump properties.
The "Koma" battle system will still be used in this sequel with the original 4-by-5 grid and touch screen support. However a number of improvements have been made, including calling support characters into battle via L/R button, without using the touchpad. Characters can now cling on to ledges when falling adjacent to them and some of the stages include areas that can be reached by destroying walls, even the floor and ceiling.
As another major improvement, Jump Ultimate Stars now supports Wi-Fi battles, which allows gamers all around the world to combat against each other.
