Nintendo's newest console is tracking behind its predecessor in terms of US launch sales, but is bringing in more dollars.
Wii U sold 460,000 units in the US last month, according to new NPD data, bringing its total lifetime sales up to 890,000.
An NPD spokesperson said: "Sales of the Wii U were lower on a unit basis when compared to the original Wii in December 2006.
"However, due to its higher price, the Wii U generated three per cent dollar sales than the Wii when looking at December vs December, but it is 11 per cent for year-to-day."
The Wii U generated over $300m in hardware sales after its first 41 days on the market. Comparetively, Wii generated $270m over the same period.
Meanwhile, 2012's other newly launched platform, PlayStation Vita, generated 94 per cent more in dollar sales in December 2012 than predecessor PSP did in December 2011.
