The last moustachioed hard b***ard we saw rampaging, two-footed, across a footie pitch wasn't Graeme Souness, but in fact, Mario as he took to the pitches of Mario Smash Football amidst a shower of flying shells, punched 25-yarders and legal professional fouls.
Nintendo is following up its quirky and fun football game with a sequel, entitled Mario Strikers Charged (working title), due to release for Wii sometime in the future. The game will offer up to 12 playable 'captains' from the Mario universe, and allow you to create your ultimate Mario dreamteam.
The highlight of course, will be the way the game makes use of the Wii's controller. As well as giving captains their own unique skills and special moves, an intriguing feature seems to be the 'sniper defending' where ball-splitting 'Mega Strikes' can be targeted and shot down out of the air by using the Wii remote.
With stadiums wrought with danger, plus WiFi-enabled multiplayer modes (for up to four) simmering tensions, you can expect Mario Strikers Charged to be one very anarchic football game indeed.
