In an interview with CVG, Ubisoft executive Alain Corre was asked whether Rayman Legends (which has been released on Wii U, PS3, PC, Xbox 360 and PS Vita) would eventually arrive on Nintendo's handheld.
"When you look at Rayman Legends you see it's a very big game with a lot of levels. The graphics in 2D are also second-to-none. So, it takes time to squeeze everything and downsize it onto other formats," he responded.
"But we're not ruling anything out for that format [the 3DS]. We can't say anything more for the moment, but we can't rule the format out."
Nintendo's 3DS has recorded its most successful year yet in the UK, with a string of key software releases ensuring the handheld outperformed both the PS3 and Xbox 360 in terms of hardware and software revenue.
Though Ubisoft has released few 3DS games since the console's launch, Corre suggested there were clear opportunities for the company in persuing the handheld.
"The 3DS is a big success, it's selling a lot of machines in a lot of countries and if we consider a franchise, game or gameplay style that can be developed for it, we'll consider it."
In February, Ubisoft announced that Rayman Legends would no longer be a Wii U exclusive and was due for release on several other platforms, which resulted in some Nintendo fans venting their outrage at the decision (the switch to multiplatform also meant the game was delayed).
The game entered at number six in the UK charts, yet the Wii U version nevertheless outsold the Xbox and PS3 editions combined.
"I think Rayman Legends is really defining what the quality of the Wii U is. Huffington Post was saying it might be the best platformer ever created, we agree," Corre said.
"It can really show what the Wii U is, when you play with the second screen on the GamePad, I think it's some of the best laughing moments you can have while playing a game.
"We believe the Wii U has real potential and power. A machine works when you have great content on it, we feel Rayman was one, Just Dance is another one coming, with Donkey Kong and Mario from Nintendo also."
