Apple has sold over 250 million iPhones; that is a huge quantity
of phones, especially when you consider that they are all basically the
same platform. When you consider mobile gaming and you add Android
phones into the mix, then between Android and Apple they have captured
around 60% of the market. By comparison, Nintendo have just 34% with the
DS and Sony an also-ran 6% with the PSP.
When Apple announced the iPhone 5, they claimed that it was a console
quality handheld gaming device. That was a huge claim, and it is
unlikely that Apple would have made it had the company not considered it
to be true. No doubt they were hoping to see Nintendo and Sony quake in
their boots.
Let’s consider the processing power of the iPhone 5 compared with the DS
and PSP. The iPhone uses the latest A6 chip and graphics processor to
drive a four inch display with an 1136 by 640 pixels resolution. The PS
Vita has a 5 inch display with a resolution of just 960 by 544 pixels,
and the DS 3.5 inch screen has a resolution of only 800 by 240 pixels.
On paper the iPhone wins hands down. Taking the processor alone, it is
more or less on par with that of the Xbox 360, so it seems that Apple
got it right.
However where the iPhone does not compare with dedicated mobile gaming
devices is the lack of physical gaming buttons. While these are not
needed for playing online casino games such as roulette and blackjack at
sites like http://www.jackpotcity.co.uk/online-slots/,
or even casual games such as Angry birds, when it involves complex
online games such as Command & Conquer Red Alert, playing with virtual
buttons is very challenging.
However the aspect ratio of the iPhone 5 is ideal for playing games in
landscape format with virtual buttons placed on the sides of the
display, so to get the best out of online gaming iPhone 5 users should
target online games that have been optimised for their phone. This is
increasingly the case for many mobile casino games.
